Too much cold air entering the nostrils

Posted by learningstudent @learningstudent, Apr 16, 2020

Well...Recently I have developed a weird symptom. I think I have had it for a month. My nose has no mucus, booger and when I inhale, I feel like there is too much air entering my nostrils so I have to use something to block part of it. Otherwise I feel so uncomfortable and suffocated. My right nostril is getting worse, there is no congestion or anything and sometimes my face or nose seems to lose sensation. When the turbinates work normally, they will shrink and swell up and provide warm air but this does not happen to my nose. All the air I breathe in is cold and is not warm at all. I am just wondering what causes it because for people who have atrophic sinusitis, they will have nose blockage. But I do not, I feel my nose is so empty and too much air entering them when inhaling even my nose is not dried. I hope somebody could help.

I have checked my nose, I do not see any turbinates, only hair and the holes of my nose. I have never done any turbinate reduction or nasal surgery.

I have this issue where my nose is so open and to the point it hurts my heart or ling when I breath heavy in thru my nose so much cold air maybe my chest is too open so what I did for temporary relief is plug my nose with some tissue no to the point I can’t breath but just enough to where in an still breath in n out my nose just not that much it stops too much air from comin in and just a nice amount plus bum Vaseline on my chest and nose. I’m a chronic weed smokier I actually stopped for 9 days last month but I started back sun recently so I could have smokers Lungs but I am only 24 and should not be having these health issues so I really hope I feel better soon. Possibly too much dry air in my home I need a humidifier I’m going to get one tmrw .

@destinyh96 -you should not be having that issue at your age. If you are a chronic weed smoker, the smoke will dry out your cilia which are the hairs that move your mucous and moisture through your nose. Once these dry out, your nose will not function as it should for moisture and humidification. Many people don’t know that their nose is an organ, just like the lungs, heart and skin...So think about your skin. If you are in the sun everyday with no sunscreen and no proper moisture, your skin will dry out and not protect you as well. Same for your nose. The dryness inside will give you the cold open feeling, you are experiencing. Look up nasal mucosa to understand it’s function. Healthy diet, fluids, exercise and moisture will help this organ, just like the other organs of the body.

Sounds like "empty Nose syndrome". I had sinus surgery and the doctor removed part of my turbinates. In fact, too much of my turbinates and left me with ENS. Not fun. Check it out on google and good luck.

@drumline7860- “Empty nose syndrome” or post nasal surgery dysfunction is an iatrogenic condition. I am very sorry for what you have had to go through and are still going through. However, if someone has not had surgery it is not kind to send them down the rabbit hole of ENS. There are many things that can mimic ENS symptoms. A non operated patient would not have this. In saying that, I would encourage any patient who is experiencing nasal symptoms to steer clear from an ENT. At most see your PCP. And know that no doctor can help you with a dry sensation/too much air in your nose. Only you can help yourself, through, hydration & humidification. The other parts of sensation are often stress driven, as many nerves in the nose are over activated by stress. Emotional stress, goes through the nose. Environmental stress, goes through the nose. The nasal mucosa that lines your nose is the same that lines your gut. It protects yourself from many things. If more people knew this, and how to properly maintain this vital organ, there would be no ENTs in business. Rather than google a rabbit hole of “dis-eases”, look for ways to improve upon your health as a whole. Some people are just more sensitive than others in the nasal cavity. And that’s it. Learn ways to manage. But do not take pills or let a doctor touch you.

I didn't say that he has it. I said that it sounds like it and I'm aware the other conditions can cause it : i.e. Hyperventilation syndrome, infection, etc. That having been said, If you check this and other forms you will find a lot of people that may be considering sinus surgery. As far as the rabbit hole, if my doctor or anyone else had told me (Not that I WOULD get it) but that I COULD get it, I never would have had the surgery to begin with, which by the way, was first diagnosed by Eugene Kern, MD, at (you guessed it) The Mayo Clinic. So...if my comments saved one person from suffering with this incurable condition, then my day has been made a little better. And... this is supposed to be a forum, not an ass ripping contest and I don't need to be scolded by you or anyone else. Two of the many symptoms of ENS are irritability and anxiety, which sadly I seem to be experiencing now. And yes I did have this confirmed by another ENT doctor. Have a good day.

@drumline7860 -my apologies if that’s how you felt. Not meant for it to have come across that way. In being on your side, if you can see I tell the individual to steer clear from ENTs, because I do know first hand the damage that they cause to someone complaining of something very minor, like dryness or pain. They do not educate patients at all and only want to operate, hence worsening or causing symptoms, such as ENS to someone who only had a minor issue. That is actually why I follow this forum as I try to educate as many people who are thinking that an ENT is someone who can help them with their nasal issues. I actually try to encourage patients to learn how to help themselves first, before any doctor ever could. The body is connected. If you are having a problem in one area, you have to look at total picture. Which is mind/body/spirit. ENTs admit they too, don’t even know how the nose functions and half the time why some of the surgeries they perform even work. I like to encourage people to realize doctors are just other humans, with more knowledge in a concentrated area. However the best expert on your body is yourself and don’t let anyone else convince you otherwise.

Thank you for your response to my rather rude comments. Please accept my apology as well as I accept yours. I'm quite sure that you meant well. Just for the record, for those that do suffer from ENS, many of my searches have suggested using "sesame oil spray" or liquid sesame oil applied with a Q-tip for the nasal dryness. I can vouch for it as it has made a difference in my life. I use the liquid. Just be sure to use organic sesame oil. It can be ordered from Natural Healthy concepts: NHC.com Merry Christmas to all. Sincerely... Jim

@destinyh96 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You said you have an, "issue where my nose is so open and to the point it hurts my heart or ling when I breath heavy in thru my nose." You also said you may, "have smokers Lungs" due to smoking marijuana.

The symptoms you are describing, their severity, and your age defiantly raise red flags. If you have not already done so please feel free to scroll through the previous comments in this discussion. You will find members like, @bride @learningstudent have experience with this topic.

I'm wondering if you spoke to a provider/doctor regarding your symptoms?

Also, if you have difficulty stopping or cutting back marijuana, I'm wondering if you have considered addiction therapy?

@destinyh96 -Hi I have experience with your topic. My first visit to an ENT was for dry/cold feeling in nasal cavity. He asked if I was a smoker. I never have smoked a day in my life. However I was around a lot of forced dry heating, after moving to a colder climate. We discussed staying properly hydrated and using a humidifier. If you have smoked marijuana for a long time, it can dry out the nasal mucosa, which needs to be moist for optimal function. Use ideas that people are suggesting. There is nothing a doctor or a prescription can do for cold/dry/open sensation. At most, see your PCP, if you are seeking peace of mind. Which is really what most, appts end up being, is a reassurance seeking visit. For your own reassurance, know that we have many different perceptions in the nose throughout the day. Once you start feeling one, and feel like it is a problem, it is easy to fixate on it and think it is something much worse. The body is complex and loud. If it feels uncomfortable, it is not uncommon for sensations to let us know. Focus on healthy habits from within. Lots of hydration, reduce the smoking, humidification, vitamin C. There are many things that add moisture back into the body other than water. Fruits/Vegetables carry moisture through your tissues as well. I do have a lot of knowledge in this area. I am trying to encourage you in a way, to know this is a very reversible feeling, when the focus is on the overall health. Not just one body part.

I could not agree more. However I am just wondering what you have gone through your nose nrd1? If u visit a doc it is just the assurance visit.
