New bacteria norcardia appearing while on daily “Big Three”

Posted by sam33 @sam33, Apr 15, 2020

I’ve been on the “big three” since 11/2019. Still having positive sputum cultures for MAC / MAI, but new character appeared this time. A Nocardia sp. I’ve not spoken to the ID doc, as appointment has been postponed due to CV. The health department notified me of the Nocardia. Has anyone dealt with this character?

No. I haven't. I would insist on consulting with the doctor as I understand it can be treated and I would think the sooner the better. But that's just me. Take care ! Toni

Thanks for your reply. I’ll definitely be seeing him eventually. I’ve read this environmental saprophyte That is everywhere there is decomposing wet vegetation. That’s everywhere in Mississippi:-). It’s just a creepy feeling, knowing anything can set up shop in your lungs, no matter how well you try to take care of yourself. Again, thanks for your response. Just thought I’d throw it out there to see if anyone had experienced it. Happy quarantining:-)

@sam33 I wouldn't wait for an appointment to get an answer, doctors everywhere are consulting by phone these days, why not contact him or her by phone or your health care portal.

@sam33, Hi there! I can tell you from my own personal experience that anywhere where there is wet decomposing anything,; spells trouble. I lived in Va. for many years where there is high humidity and lots of rotting leaves. I stayed sick the majority of the time. I now live in Coastal S.C. where the soil is mostly sand. Things are pretty dried up in 20 mins after a rain. This is due to moisture wicking away rapidly in the sandy soil. That makes for less rot, and mold, etc. I have faired way better here than anywhere else I have lived. I hope this helps.

I had nocardia in 2015, which showed up on a routine sputum at Mayo Rochester.
I was immediately put on Sulfamethoxazole TMP by my pulmonologist (don’t remember exact mg. dosage) but was referred to infectious disease dept. and raised dosage to a strong 3 big pills daily regimen for a year. Regular blood tests were done to check on liver and kidney function throughout that year. Don’t wait - insist on speaking with the doctor.
