Telemedicine: How to make the most of a virtual doctor visit

With all of the advances in medicine over the years it only takes a health crisis like COVID-19 to push us to new frontiers in treating our health conditions. I recently read an interesting article by Dr. Edward Creagan with some good sound tips on the basics.

I will be having my first video appointment on May 19 with my doctor from the University of Michigan. I'm supposed to get a lot of support and somehow it will come through the My Chart patient portal. I must admit that I'm glad to not have to make the 50-minute drive to the U of Michigan. I just hope I can handle the technical stuff well enough to have the appointment.

My appointment isn't until the 19th and I'm sure it will go OK. I won't be so tired from the drive to the U of Michigan so it should go quite well.

@johnbishop Hello John,

Good topic! Especially with the COVID-19 situation our world is facing now and the need for social distancing.

I see how valuable it is to have electronic records in that doctors from different hospital systems can access your health situation and know what meds you are taking, the type of health issues you are dealing with as well as test results.

I must admit, however, that I do have a problem with telemedicine. My problem is with the "cloud." Are these videos kept in the cloud? Are these used for other purposes other than the one-time appointment?

What do we know about this? Thanks in advance for helping answer these questions.

Good evening Teresa, @hopeful33250, Those are real issues, I don't think these videos
are stored. That is why the doctor had to write the follow-up script. Our yoga and meditation zoom meetings are also not recorded. I think you would have to give permission for storing the recorded video. Tell you what. I will ask at my video appointment with my dermatologist on May 14. Don't let me forget.

@artscaping Be aware that, one of security issues with Zoom is that recorded sessions end up in the public domain.

Hi there @elizm, thanks for the reminder. Are you suggesting that even though I am told there will be no recording........there still may be one. That's a bummer.

@artscaping No, Chris... just alerting that patients shouldn't be tempted to record on their end (which is an option on the Zoom screen).

When I was checking in recently, in Rochester MN (Neuro Ophthalmology), I was asked if I'd like to do a telemedicine consult maybe next time. The idea is very inviting, although it's tough to dilate my eyes while I'm at home (funny). Has anybody else had a teleconsult with their doctor in Rochester?

Hi @Erinmfs I’ve had 2 telehealth visits with my doctors in Colorado. Both went very well! They were both with my neurologists. Did the doctor say that she would need to have your eyes dilated? Using eye equipment could be difficult! Let me know, it sounds very interesting!
