Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@imallears Eeeeuw. Snake? You are some Wild Woman in the Culinary Adventure Department. My family virtually lived on venison (deer, for the uninitiated) one bleak winter, with turnips. I can't even look at venison anymore, but I love turnips to this day. I tried swordfish years ago in NYC. Not my favorite. Is it a protected species nowadays? I had Mallard l'orange in Paris on (one of) my honeymoon(s). Lol

Swordfish is farmed a lot and I think, like a lot of fish, there are limits on harvesting and undersized swordfish are off limits. I had it once also and didn’t like it. Our Publix always has the steaks frozen but it is probably farmed. The snake, like eel tasted like grilled meat tidbits. We also have gator bites on our Florida menus but I have never had them...they always seem to be fried. I should walk down by the water to see if I can spot any gators. Saw the dolphins when walking in Tarpon Springs once...awesome creatures. Getting ready for the gym...will be offline until tonight.
Walk and stay healthy you guys

@artist01, So now we can call you Torpedo Laurie???? lol Congrats on your continued steps and walks in 40 degree weather that has some of us running for cover!

Have to heartily agree that Jake's, @jakedduck1, 5 mile swim is Olympic worthy!

I used to love to water ski and swim so I took a college life saving course. The course included "saving" others in the pool. The coach had five humongous football players jump in for the test and I nearly fainted at their size! Didn't drown myself nor them but steered clear of pools for awhile.

@fiesty76 😆 Forty degrees is balmy, Banana Belt weather for us northerners! We are currently swooning over our wonderful temperatures this week!
I'm laughing over your life saving skills!
The closest I ever came to a rescue was when my Golden Lab dragged me to shore in the shallow end of the lake!

Hurray for your daylilies and daffys popping up, @becsbuddy! Despite the horrific ice storm experienced earlier, my first daffodil blooms retained their color despite being bent to the ground. Now later ones are blooming in both back and front yards; tulips and hyacinths are up but no bulbs showing yet.

Picking up my tax forms yesterday, the accountant told me of the predicted blizzard coming your way this weekend. Maybe in addition to the homemade cookies, you could entice @jakedduck1 with some hot chocolate or mug of buttered rum??? Hope you and others stay safe, warm and home if possible this weekend!

@lioness, I would love to see the crocus popping their heads. Alas, my husband planted many of them and we enjoyed the sight of them for one day. By the next day, the deer had eaten all of them. It is very difficult to find any plant the deer won't eat. We formerly were excited when the new fawns appeared. Now, they are just more pests to add to the herd. We have 8 acres and it is impossible to fence out the deer. We just live with them. Our dog is now aged and cannot chase them. Such is life in the woods. Enjoy your blossoms! @joybringer

@lioness I'm in Canada, on the West Coast, which has quite moderate winters. In past years, I've lived in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario, where temperatures sometimes dip to -40 F.
That's why I now live in balmy British Columbia! Lol

@joybringer1 Aw, so sorry to hear that the deer are being pests now. We have them here too. They love tulips and newly planted cedars, we learned. T
Time for you to get another dog? Maybe a younger rescue buddy for your older boy. I got a pup for my aged rough coat collie back in the day and she LOVED him. You probably cringe at the thought of another puppy, but there are lots of mid-or-older dogs begging for a loving home. My collie was 5 when she found me at our SPCA, and she was just the most wonderful, sweet loyal dog. I'm sure you've already investigated that route. I should stop!
