Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Well, mid 30’s and sunshine are heavenly for a walk! Birds were out chirping but spring is not even close. Darn. Snow on the ground and more to come. March and April are the snowiest months here. It I did walk 2 miles! Poor Poppy used up all his spoons!
Is the weather going to let you get out @artist01 ?

I got out in the wind, rain/sleet for a super brisk walk. Glad to know that I hadn’t gone too far before I was “half way home”. Refreshing, to say the best!

@becsbuddy
ARE YOU KIDDING 30’s?
It's a chilly 65° here maybe if I walked in the sun I wouldn’t freeze.
Your nuts!!!
Be sure to take some candy or cookies. Digesting food increases body temperature although protein increases it a little more.
Happy trails all,
Jake

@jude07 I walked this morning for a half mile. Not very far when I read how others are doing, but right now that is a big deal for me, since I just found out I have a compression fracture in lower back! It was overcast and cold. But just now I walked another bit, in glorious sunshine and 50 degrees! What drew me outside again was the sight of a bald eagle flying from the creek over our house! I was hoping to see it landed in one of the standing trees in back lot, so I hurried at a slow pace to go check. Did not see it, but hoping to see signs of nest building soon.

Planning to get outside tomorrow after the MRIs for more walking,
Ginger

Well, don’t feel badly, I didn’t walk! Went outside with dogs, cleaned up after them. The wind was blowing, clouds heavy and it just felt raw. Supposed to be 38 on thermometer but sure didn’t feel like it. I said tomorrow is another day and went inside and snuggled with dogs!

@becsbuddy. Nooooo. The wind is howling, the rain falls sideways from the gusts, the ferries can't run, and @artist01 can't get out for a walk! Waaaa.

@gingerw, you are awesome! All that walking with a compression fracture! But, Missy, should you be doing all that walking?? (Granny here.) Lol. Please be careful, in between your MRI appointments.

@artist01 Laurie, gentle walking is good for getting outside, and bringing blood flow to the area. I am careful to use a cane, or walking sticks, and go slow. My hauling rocks project is on indefinite hold, and I see the weeds coming up, probably cheering that they will stick around for a while. MRIs are tomorrow, dexscan scheduled for 3/17. Also using an old back brace, which helps stabilize the area.

I would believe that the eagle is a sign of strength. Keep strong as you continue your MRI and and procedure/s you may be facing next. You can do it, keep believing!

@gingerw. Wellll, ok then, it sounds like you're being very careful. And fresh air does wonders for the soul. (From what I remember. It sounds like a tornado out there right now.) Take care, Little Everready Bunny. ❤
