Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Well darn, @jakedduck1! Hope you are dismissed quickly and are feeling much better! Goodness, you have candy waiting for you at home. Wishing you a very speedy recovery...let us know how you are doing, ok????

Woke up to a very light covering of snow yesterday and was super delighted! Drought here so any sky fall moisture is appreciated. Got a chuckle on a drive to share books with a friend to see two young girls, each standing in the beds of 2 different pickups tossing "slushy" snowballs toward each other. All was melted by noon but wondered if the mushy snowballs landed with a thud.

Jake, this is no way to begin the new year. I hope you will recover and soon be out of the hospital. Just think of all the sweets that await you. May the rest of the new year be much better for you! @joybringer1

@jakedduck1 oh, my, you’re in the hospital! Hope it’s not serious. I was thinking of you yesterday when I was reading the papers. Article called “comfort me with cookies.” Mainly, the Top Data Organization named 2020 as the ‘year of the cookie!’ Guess they were thinking about you, also. Please let us know when you are home!

For the last 3 days, I have gotten plenty of walking and exercise (bending, lifting, reaching) helping pack up my daughter's house a good 10,000 steps each day. She is working today, so I decided to take a day of rest and catch up here at home - we'll be back at it tomorrow and try to finish up Monday.

When we moved her 3 1/2 years ago, I thought she had too much stuff, and now she has even more. Yikes! This move is temporary, to a 1 BR flat, and a lot of her belongings need to go to storage while she hunts for a house.

Now I need to go grab a few groceries, then a leisurely walk - my first of the new year.

@cathorio Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! Strap on your walking shoes, bundle up if you need to. Fresh air awaits us as we step outside to see what the New Year is bringing us! Tell us about your daily walk, is it city, or more country? Will you see many people to stay the suggested 6' distance from? Will you have a critter along with you for your walk, or another family member?

We'll give a chat when you get finished, grab a cuppa tea or cocoa and relax after that walk!

I think I’m back again! And glad to be back. We’ve had some warm winter weather here in Colorado, so it was great to be out walking. Didn’t go far today since were going to our son’s house for a socially distanced lunch on the patio. And they insist that we try the hot tub! Aaaggghh
So, to get myself into a walking mood, I thought we should come up with walking songs so we can hum and bounce as we walk! How about Johnny Cash’s “I’ll Walk the Line” or Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots are Made for Walkin’”. Think I’m dating myself. Oh well. Off to walk the dog and hum! How about you?

Sounds like a day well planned, the hot tub may be the best part after lunch and conversation with family. I hope you will thoroughly enjoy it.
I woke up to about 4-5 inches of new snow to brighten our day. I headed out and first shoveled some and then took the snow blower to the end of the drive. I don’t like the smell of the fumes so shoveling works as long as it’s not too deep. Once I had it all cleaned off, I was off to enjoy the sun and nearly a hour walk - what a great winter day!!
