Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi, everyone! I’m back but a lot slower. It is great to hear that everyone is still getting walk in! I haven’t done anything. My disease is back ( as I tried to tell the doctors months ago) so I have to start a new treatment. I so want to get out and walk somewhere! The problem is, the fires are so close so the air is terrible! We had 2 fires start on Sunday about 10 miles from us. Been an interesting few weeks.

@becsbuddy Im so sorry your disease is back I hope the new treatment will help . When the fires where so bad here in Ca. the smoke came from 50 miles away down the coastline . It was hard to see and those that had lung disease,s had a hard time of it . So you just stay put don't put anymore burden on your self then you already have . Walk in the house , I know big deal . Take care Linda

It is so difficult to start new treatments and then your environment complicates your walking as well. You might try some chair exercises when you get tired or touring your rooms over and over. We are here to cheer you on, you can do it!

@becsbuddy You go! Do something active any day you can. Watch the air quality. I found with our nearby fires and smoke drift, seeing blue skies was not necessarily healthy. Walk your house, backwards for a different view. Maybe an inside mall? Take your little pooch with you for company when you can! Rest, then do again when you are able. We've missed you!

@becsbuddy, So glad you are back even if a lot slower! You did know some time back and it is frustrating when docs aren't listening. Hope the new treatment kicks in quickly and each day finds you feeling better.

Daughter told me yesterday that two more fires fairly near her in Boulder have broken out and now more haze and debris that travels to their neighborhood by winds is making it more difficult for her hikes and general air quality is much poorer. The earlier fire has yet to be completely put out and now more are popping up.

My walks have been greatly shortened from a sciatica nerve flare up and coupled with corporal tunnel from too much computer has now resulted in over a month of heating pads, topicals, Tylenol and hot baths. Discouraging and some walks are more purely symbolic for keeping to my goal than really providing the exercise and outing I'd like.

Hope our other walkers are making better strides and wishing all well and continued safety.

Sounds like you are encountering some difficulties as well. Hope that the hot baths and Tylenol give you the relief you need.
I procrastinated the last number of days, however did finally get out and walk. The temps dipped down into the lower thirties and snow is predicted for today. I have to find a new mindset to keep walking, my bones do not like the chill.
Have the best day possible, all!

@fiesty76 @becsbuddy. I'm on the "injured list" too. I'm unable to walk my usually distance of 3 miles due to hip bursitis and SI joint disfunction. Had a cortisone shot four weeks ago, at my follow up appointment, my ortho doctor prescribed PT but the one he sent me to who takes my insurance are all booked up until mid November. Had to dig into my pocket to go back to my own PT. They squeezed me in two time slots this week. They don't take my insurance but will give me a cash discount.
The weather is cooler after a week of 90s. It's such a shame that I can't enjoy the fall weather with long walks. Hope the PT helps and I have some good news to report to my ortho doctor at next appointment.
Take care everyone, speedy recovery! Go Dodgers! We're going to the World Series!!!

I appreciate your response, @jude07 ! I'm laughing because not only my bones "do not like the chill" but neither does my brain...just the thought of "cold snap predicted" or "ice on the way" makes me do a fast hobble these days to adjust the thermostat to High heat...lol

Although heat & cold treatments are recommended for both my present pretty-much-out-of commission ailments, I confess to showing more preference to the heating pads vs cold packs...a royal wimp, here. I didn't mention stretches for the sciatica but those also make me "think" I'm helping.

Also doing a small pity party because of missing out on some of the autumn scenery changes and like you, am going to have to come up with some better mindset options for walking as more inclement weather approaches. The change in scenery is as uplifting to me as the actual time spent walking so I'm thinking that I'll resort to going to our largest mall which opens at 7am or did before covid expressly for walkers.

Are you and others thinking and making alternative plans for the upcoming wintry days that will make "regular" walks more dangerous for some of us? Wet, slippery, rough surfaces don't mix well with safety first but "where there's a will there's a way", yes?

Thanks again, Jude and hope you and all are continuing to list personal health and safety near the top of priorities!
