Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@ellens
Very interesting story. I know you can mix several tablespoons into an 8 oz glass of water to help pass stool, but good to know you can find eggs in the stool so you can treat for pinworms.

I will be back on-line on Friday. I hope you get some Epsom Salts by then, it really helps.

It's a bag of "Epsom Salt " you measure out 1 cup and put it into a pan of very warm water. Soak your hands. I put the pan on a tv tray and watch tv while my hands or feet soak. Epsom salt has magnesium in it and it enters your body by way if your skin. Your skin is the biggest organ of the body and like osmosis it is absorbed. Very helpful, I do it weekly.

This might gross you out, but when we were little kids my brother and I picked up pinworms. Off to Mayo where they had us drink Epsom Salt--the magnesium really caused a clean-out poop--and then they were able to analyze the poop for eggs, which they found. Then he and I had to chew wintergreen-flavored pills for a couple of weeks at least. It was a long time before I was willing to eat that flavor again.

@lioness, did the 1st ice cube shipment arrive on time??? Smiles. We've had record breaking heat in west Tx this yr and while new ice cubes are forming, Ive been known to resort to frozen juice pops and frozen blueberries. Enjoy the blueberries as a snack year round but have some remaining juice pops I can include with your next shipment. Stay well and out of the heat!

@fiesty76 and @lioness Heat wave? We’re due for SNOW today! And it’s only 33 degrees! Yesterday was in the 90’s and the sun tried to get thru, but the smoke and soot from not-so-near fires cancelled the sun and blue skies. Guess I won’t walk outside today!

@becsbuddy. Do you live in Colorado? My friend sent her granddaughter to college in Denver Friday and it seems like it's going to snow. We in CA had a few days of 100+ degrees. There are also fires too, my daughter said there were ashes on her patio even though the fire was not closr. Weather reports indicate there will be strong Sant Ana winds tonight through tomorrow. This is a treacherous offshore wind that often fans devastating fires. I walked this morning early around 7:30, maybe later this evening, depending on the weather.

@lioness Today, I am feeling not so good. A whole host of problems lately. My knees hurt and crack every time I bend them. My fingers are so stiff they scream in pain. My eyes feel like someone drained out my eye fluid. My hip aches and my feet today are okay, for a change.
