Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@fiesty76 No, you’re not the only one who gets crabby and short tempered. I sometimes think it’s my middle name! You are always so upbeat and have a kind word for everyone, I can’t imagine you going into a slump! Guess it’s serious. But then the world has gotten so serious. Politics and one country not liking another, and the job situation, etc, etc. It never ends! But, I guess, if we continue doing what’s right, and helping those here on MCC, we’ll be OK, and one small part of the world will be OK.

@becsbuddy, Becky, thank you so much for your encouragement and especially that I am not alone in now feeling more crabby about insignificant things that I would ordinarily blow off. I'm wondering if it is maybe this sense of helplessness that I can do so little, if anything at all, to improve the many challenges facing us all right now? Most within my small circle believe and view current situations so differently from me that I've begun questioning if I might be the one who is so totally out-of-step with my self-quarantine and caution that I am the aberrant and they, the more normal realistic. I will continue doing what I am and am grateful for your response.

Good morning to all the walkers, exercisers, water exercises,at-home exercisers, mountain climbers, ice wall climbers, paragliders, and wanna be marathoners. We started a new month so we should all have new goals and resolutions. You can have a garden lunch, if you want, just be sure to walk it off like us ice cream eaters! Maybe @jakedduck1 will throw candy bars in celebration! Guess I’d better go for a walk now. 🤪

@becsbuddy.. Off to walk now, highs in the 90 today. Yuck! Better get an early start. Just got my veggies box delivered, wonderful farm fresh veggies harvested this morning. After the walk, I have to sit down and look for recipes based on what I got. Looks like Italian food, as I got beautiful tomatoes, eggplants, and heavenly basil. Chinese stir fry too with the baby bok choy. Better get going. Happy walking everyone. And to those of you in Florida, I hope you are safe from the hurricane.

I am looking forward to starting a new month. Time for me to re-set my walking goal and to increase my distance and add some hills now that I have accomplished my 5 day walking pattern. ❤
Thanks for the reminder and the encouragement.

No MAYBE about it! I haven’t had ice cream for ages until I heard the ice cream truck yesterday. I got a 50/50 bar. Didn’t know they still made them. Haven’t had one of those since I was a kid. Love um.
I was bad today I haven’t walked yet and no plans to and I don’t plan to make it up tomorrow well maybe make up the candy today was a light candy day.
Had you single chocolate chip cookie today Becky?

@lilypaws, Hi, Lily, Thanks for understanding.

As this pandemic drags on and on, I find my already "overly sensitive self" becoming more grouchy and touchy about things that ordinarily wouldn't phase me. I get out of sorts over the fact that so many continue to defy virus safety precautions and that I live in an area where far too many "individualists" declare that they will do whatever they choose to do and let the rest of the world be damned. Could never have ever imagined in anyone's worst nightmare that we would all be experiencing the radical changes brought on by the pandemic that is so drastically changing our everyday lives.

Members of Mayo Connect are brought here because of having or being caregivers for those who have serious health issues. We are more aware of the dangers Covid-19 poses. I am so grateful that this community exists for us to share and learn from one another.

Are others here finding themselves finding it harder to stay positive or am I just going into a slump?

I understand your feelings and also go up and down as this drags on....due to the community I live in and the choices people make, I and my small group of friends stay home almost exclusively and it can drain on a person’s psyche from time to time. I daily give thanks and feel grateful for my choice to protect my health and keep others safe. That helps me greatly. Take care❤️

What is a 50/50 bar? I’m surprised ice cream trucks are out and about during virus time....I grew up out east and have fond memories of the Good Humor truck. Driver was named John. Funny the details you remember!

Today has been a busy one! I started with a 3.5 mile walk because the weather was great, then came home and edited a letter my daughter is preparing to send to her school administration about return to school concerns. Then I offered to mow lawn for my husband so he can fix a flat and tune up my bike. That was followed by a lengthy call with both daughters about the letter.
Finally, I sat down for a snack. In between were two sets each of hand and back exercises and a bit of weeding. When I looked at my fitness monitor I see over 14500 steps - no wonder I am tired. Good thing I have leftovers to serve for supper...

@sueinmn, Oh, my, I need another nap just from reading your very busy day! You go girl! And by-the-by, are you hiding a 25 yr old within that grandmom countenance???

REPLY

@fiesty76 Haha! No. I was a lot slower yesterday - just a two mile stroll rhen a few small errands and a little weeding. This morning I am wrangling little boys while my daughter has Zoom meetings about the upcoming school year. If I have any energy left I'll walk later. Very cool and refreshing here for a few days so afternoon walking is possible. Also going to try my bike for the first time in over years- got the ok from the hand doc.
Hope to calculate how close I am to my goal later today.
