Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I use something called Outback Pain Relief, have bought it on a Facebook ad site (when I first tried it) and now usually through Amazon since I have their Prime. It has some ingredients like what you are talking about has - tea tree oil, eucalyptus, etc. Rubs in nicely and seems to help sore areas. I think it comes in a few forms, I like the roll on.

@lioness & @sueinmn I walked 1/4th mile yesterday. Of course, part of that was walking in the house. My husband told me at the end I was not dong steps. I got tired out. I may not go out today. My daughter is picking me up for lunch and then I have a hair appt. Thank your comments. I feel cutting down on Tramadol in a week is not good, but that is what my surgeon wanted plus to walk more. I'm going to send a message to see if I'm walking far enough or too much. I'm hurting on my left side today. By my L-4 & 5 out to my buttocks. I think it's just muscle, but I hope I didn't pull a screw out yesterday. Thanks for your comments. They mean a lot to me.

I actually got out while it was still coolish! Ran into several friends and we just went around the neighborhood and then the park. By then, it was too hot for Poppy so we came home. I think I like @fiesty76 ’s idea of walking in a big store. Good for my feet, but bad for my wallet and health!

Glad I got out very early today and did my 2.5 miles - I was sweating by the time I got home at 8am - it seems like everyone else in the neighborhood had the same idea. It's already over 90F and 90% humidity here - I may not even be enticed to sit in the shade by the pond to read toady unless we get a breeze!

@migizii I’m. Ot part of the walking group, but enjoy reading the stories....since my fusion surgery on my foot, I’ve been awfully sedentary. However, I was put in a boot a couple weeks ago and can now walk a few thousand steps a day on the heel of the boot....slow, but steady improvement.....even saw an eagle fly overhead the other day and I sure notice a lot of activities in the trees and bushes due to my “rate of speed.”😜

@lioness, Thanks for asking. We've just learned our 10 yr old has tested positive for Covid. I posted about it in the Covid thread. Oh, goodness, I hope those 50+ posts weren't from me? lol My tooth became loose with more discomfort. Naturally the dentist is closed on Fridays. I was thankful to buy Oraljel through drive thro' Walgreens window and the Tylenol gel caps along with 2 dentist scripts are helping too. LIke you, I have noticed a sharp drop recently in posts from others who had been posting on the different threads regularly. Wondering what has happened with them?

@fiesty76 Oh no I'm so sorry . How did he get it ? Is school in session?I'llsay a prayer for him what is his first name ? You must feel terrible with this news. Is he the only grand you have? His family will have to be in quarentine also ? I'm glad its not only me that has noticed a drop in post . Here is something I never heard of before . I called to make another appt with the Dentist I couldn't get into now since I'm over 65 I need to get a slip from my PCP to go to the Dentist I don't think so. That's rediculous I'm not bothering my Dr about this . I told the lady I never heard of such a thing and will find another dentist . Did you ever hear of such a thing? To say the least she got a ear full
