Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Today was the first day since July began that I DID go walking, this evening, and took one dog with me! In the 80’s, less humidity and a nice breeze which felt good and kept bugs away! Amazing! Last night was actually able to turn the AC off and sleep with open windows! SO nice! Storm went through last evening, dropping temps from 90’s and 2.5 inches of rain - all welcome in southern WI!

Yay for you, @wisco! Doing a happy dance that you could take a walk. Could you send a bit of cooling rain to TX? Temps in my area are running in the 100's with no rain in sight. Maybe here by Oct. it will be cool enough to sleep with open windows??? Lovely to look forward to!

@becsbuddy, Sending you sympathy cyber hugs! Smart dog, Becky!! Smiles. When I returned from walk this morning at 7am, it was already hot.
Because our area is restricted to 2 mornings/week for irrigation watering, I've been hand watering front and back each day. "Thrive" is out the window and replaced with "Please stay Alive" because of successive days of 100+ with more in the forecast. Want me to send you an extra pr of "invisible blinders" for ignoring growing indoor dust bunnies and chores? Mine work pretty well! vbg

@fiesty76 Well, I actually got out early this morning! Didn’t take the dog, though. Not a lot of people for a Saturday. That’s good, though. I could just carry my mask and be prepared. And, please send a pair of invisible blinders! I saw the dust bunnies today—think I’ll sleep late tomorrow so I don’t see them.

I'm in my early 40s, but was told my xrays look like those of a 70 yr old. One doc tells me I have mixed connective tissue disease and another tells me I have SLE. They agree I have varicose veins and osteoarthritis as well as spinal issues. I've kept off 100lbs, but need to loose at least 60lbs more. I'm down for walking motivation!!! Hope I can help be motivation for y'all too!

Wow, impressive weight loss! Great for you! Taking off all those pounds will definitely help your joints feel better, no question! Might help varicose veins to some extent? I understand those can be hereditary, at least to some extent.
