Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

My son in law was working home this morning and come over at 8 to put it together. He left halfway through for a brief online meeting and then was back and finished it before 9: 30. I was surprised to see him. He gets antsy when he knows something has to be done. I finished “playing” with it and went out to get a new heavy duty cutting board and a few doodads. It so cute I don’t want to dirty up my kitchen later. I now have more prep space which was the reason for getting it and I’m not so jammed up with pots, pans, appliances and what not. I love love love it. My daughter in law who is an interior designer along with my son found it online for me. I always send her pics of things I am thinking to buy...love her taste and out of the box thinking. It was so funny to watch them doing their house Reno a few years back and changing each other’s blueprints. Jim wanted to add another story..that didn’t happen but he had his way with the kitchen.

And all I had to do was shop and play in my kitchen. I opened some of the boxes for my SIL and that was it. I don’t want to dirty up my kitchen tonight lol.

Happy FL Mary

@fiesty76 Thank you fiesty76 I was hurting this morning across my low back L-4 and L5, wear I had the nerve being pinch and the surgeon had to do a lot of work to get the nerves unpinched. Remember my surgery was 9 hours. Yes, walking is what they want me to do, but I wonder if I went too far yesterday. I did 3 blocks. I'm going to see how I feel today and may just do 2 blocks. But my pain pills are taking some of the pain away.
I go to Mayo tomorrow and have my post-op visit with the surgeon.

Hi @lilypaws, I was thinking about you and wondered how your post-op visit went. I hope your recovery is going well.

Everyone, it’s just too hot to go walking. My dog agrees. The temp on the sidewalk today was about 160*! So now we,ve all got to get busy exercising indoors! Problem with that is seeing everything that needs doing! No walking for me today. I had my rituxan infusion. I’ll get busy again tomorrow! Happy exercising!

Today was the first day since July began that I DID go walking, this evening, and took one dog with me! In the 80’s, less humidity and a nice breeze which felt good and kept bugs away! Amazing! Last night was actually able to turn the AC off and sleep with open windows! SO nice! Storm went through last evening, dropping temps from 90’s and 2.5 inches of rain - all welcome in southern WI!

@wisco50 @funcountess Yes, I have arthritis, have had a lot of surgeries to repair damage from it. I am on a number of discussions, so it may have been mentioned elsewhere first.

My docs are at Twin Cities Ortho in Minnesota, have been with a number of them in the past 20+ years. They have their own surgery centers, and go to great lengths to keep everything immaculate to reduce infection risks of all sorts. I have also had one of my hand therapists since her children were infants - one has now graduated high school.

Everything is progressing well, now I'm just trying to be patient until I can begin rehab and use it again. After 3 weeks, I managed to mostly prepare dinner tonight. I'm sure my husband is tired of cooking, and we're not going to restaurants yet. I have also figured out how to do laundry and even folding most of it one handed, he just needs to tote the baskets upstairs for me.

@wisco, do you know what technique theybused on your thumb?

Hi Sue,
So glad you are doing well. Hope you are back to gardening soon.
I don’t think any of the Gardner’s in the connect group had a day like I had today.
7:00a.m. I hear chain saws going on side of the house. Yep, you, guessed right the bullies had their Gardner’s cutting my trees new as well as older trees.
I just stood on my property, and watched the Gardner’s every step they took. They had tall ladders and extension poll pruning sheers I even got the camera out and took photos.
Poor Gardner’s I had them shaking, told them you kill the trees, and you pay. I was out there until they left 2 hours later.
I had the sprinklers going for almost 20 minutes, making sure everything got a good soaking.
It’s been very hot the past few days.
If that’s not enough,I went for a walk in backyard for a few minutes. I then . Stood On the grass near the Cut trees just looking at trees, and as I was about to move away, I see the pervert is looking me in the face, just starring over the wall. Before I could open my mouth,l could see he bent over like a cave man walk, and walked up his hill, where I could see he was smelling his bushes. No roses, or flowers, just sniffing, and looking over into my yard.
I’m at my wits end with this. I can now see into one of the bedrooms at his house. Looks like cameras, cannot really tell.
My only option at this point is getting full grown plants, and digging up lawn to plant more trees, bushes.
There is a nursery in l.a. that only sells full grown greenery. I need to contact them.
What is so interesting in my backyard?
I was going to put more water in my water feature, but decided no.
Law enforcement does nothing when you contact them.
If I want to sell in the next year or so, I need a thick forest of,privacy, otherwise I must disclose the perverts actions to the real estate company.
Too bad I did not have the hose in my hand, the pervert would of had a nice wet face.
Anyone care to top my day today?
Funcountess

@becsbuddy Sorry to hear the heat is keeping you home. We have had a short turn in the weather to cooler and less humid, so I have had some good walks this week. It was even cool enough in the late afternoon to get my husband (not a morning person) to walk a mile with me to view a nearby road construction project.
Finishing my breakfast & heading out before the predicted rain today. By the end of today, I should be at 180 miles of 260 on my trip to Amana Iowa!

@becsbuddy, Sending you sympathy cyber hugs! Smart dog, Becky!! Smiles. When I returned from walk this morning at 7am, it was already hot.
Because our area is restricted to 2 mornings/week for irrigation watering, I've been hand watering front and back each day. "Thrive" is out the window and replaced with "Please stay Alive" because of successive days of 100+ with more in the forecast. Want me to send you an extra pr of "invisible blinders" for ignoring growing indoor dust bunnies and chores? Mine work pretty well! vbg
