Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

@athoub Welcome to connect NO its not to late we seem to just go on and on . we love out group as while walking we enjoy the birds or flowers and take pictures if we see something interesting and share on here so we are all interested in where and what we see on out walks. Some of us set goals like our leader Becky is walking to somewhere in Colorado so we figure how many miles we do each day some more then others. Our fearless leader is @becsbuddy she can give you some ideas . Some listen to music on there route See you on the virtual trail

thank you @lioness ..but you know as a liver transplant recipient sometimes if I do effort I feel not well in the next day and maybe stay in the bed for one or two days but am trying to do my best
I have to overcome my situation to be better in the future .... and am looking to surprise my doctor when I lose weight lol

Hi @rosemarya nice to meet you ... it's my pleasure to join you tomorrow I will walk for 45 min and do a bicycle for 20 min and maybe some DDP yoga if I have enough energy ( of course inside the house )
and please as a mentor and liver transplant recipient could you advise me with support groups to follow

@athoub I didn't realize you where a liver transplant till I read more of your post . @rosemarya can sure help you with that but your body will tell you when you have had enough . I teach a sr. chair exercise where I live and that's the first thing I tell people listen to your body when tired ,quit or you'll have problems. So just do what you can start slowly and build up . I'll still see you on the virtual trail I don't walk everyday but try to at least 4 days a week .

Hi @athoub I’m really glad you’ve decided to join us! I’m @becsbuddy and I started this group because, like most people with autoimmune diseases, I had terrible fatigue. ya, I understand.... for me I don't think the gym is a good idea I subscribed for 3 months and attended for 3 days only lol ...am not a gym girl
but after I had my liver transplant surgery before four years I gained more than 50 pounds and every time I visit the doctor he asks me to lose my weight which is so hard, I tried most of the diets, each time I failed and gain more weight.
last time I tried a keto diet and unfortunately I get the same result
I thought maybe because am not moving at all, my time is divided between laying in the bed or watching movies
I hope this time it will work diet + walking and some exercises

You are off to a great start. Don’t worry about a particular diet. Just try to stay away from wheat, processed foods and complex carbs. Think more veggies and lean protein. You will find that you are less inclined to eat because you are moving more.
Also, if you find yourself sitting for any length of time like I do if I am binging a series on TV, just get up and walk around the house a few times or stretch.
My daily 2.5 mile walk was cut short to a 30 minute 1 mile walk. I have a gym class today so that’s not too bad. I only saw one other woman walking and none of the usual runners. The heat index will be between 101 and 105 degrees. At 7 am it was already 82 degrees. It’s too buggy to walk at night....Welcome to Florida!

@imallers Glad to hear its mandatory there it has been here for about a week now but the cases still keep going up especially in L.A. county

I was so delighted when they mandated masks indoors. For my county it is indoors at any business or government office regardless of the capacity. Optional for those under 18. I am going to wear my mask going into the gym today and will remove it when I am set up before class begins. We have a family friend who has COVID...first one I know personally but we haven’t seen him in ages.
I only walked a mile today...heat index will be 101 to 105 degrees. Saw no runners and only one walker and our usual biker dude who we called the California jogger before he had a knee operation. Nice older guy with long flowing blond hair and psychedelic jog and bike clothes. Been running for years.

Florida is a hot spot on more ways than one.

We are so lucky to be back in MN, where our only issue is biting gnats & mosquitos, not heat and humidity . Heading out for my walk now because - I get to visit my 94 yo friend (outdoor visit) today during my usual walk time! I will tour her amazing gardens (that I used to tend) with her daughter, then we will have coffee and catch up. Finally, I will try to set up Zoom on her laptop if I can so she can join our weekly Master Gardener meetups.

I was a wimp last week - only added 9 miles to my Amana trip because of hand surgery on Tuesday - trying to add at least 20 this week... having been taking 2 short and one longer walk each day to stave off boredom while my hand is out of commission. Being stopped along the way by neighbors to explain the cast, and answer garden questions, so lots of socializing going on from a safe distance.

exactly your totally right I have to listen to my body,
but sometimes the people around you don't understand your situation and you feel upset that you are not the same person that before the surgery

@lioness My friend. I have been home for 1 week since my 9 hour fusion surgery from T10 to pelvis. Very tired and sore, but have painpills to help the pain. I had a rough time with low blood pressure where I would pass out and they too, Valium away and my Blood pressure stablized. I had Low Hemaglobin so had to have a red blood cell infusion. I was in the hospital for 7 days, longer than expected. Just wanted to let you know how I am now. Very fatigued, but it was a big surgery. Jeanie
