Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I started my 1st week of Let’s go Walking today. I selected a walking path close to home. I’m going to walk early in the AM and early in the evening to see what works best for me. When walking today I felt like I was walking with a group and not by myself.

@trishanna, Covid-19 has created more challenges for us on restrictive diets and grocery shortages make it much harder to stay on point.
Because of my stage 3 ckd, I’ve greatly reduced meat proteins in my diet by opting for some of the following. Of course each person’s diet requires fine tuning but Davita.com and this may help with alternative protein sources:

@yakki, My goal for 2020 was to walk 3x/week. Until this Connect group started the walking thread, I found it difficult to make myself walk alone. I agree that having the support of a virtual group makes the self-discipline I need much easier for me to follow.

@yakki we are so glad to have you in the group! Have you had a chance to check out some other groups? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/covid-19/ This one is especially for these times. And there are groups for almost everything! Becky

@fiesty76 thank you for the web site with protein alternative dishes. I also enjoyed looking through the English magazine.!

Hi, again @yakki So what brought you to Connect? How did you find us? We’re glad you’re here!

Thanks for the welcome. I’m a subscriber to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter. “Connect with others” section gave an address to connect with groups. Your virtual walk caught my eye. I’m on my 3rd day/week one. I find that an early morning walk gets me focused. How on earth did you come up with such a great idea?

Good morning @yakki . I’m really glad you found our walking group! I was sorta down in the dumps in February and needed to do something. It was too cold and snowy and icy to get out to do anything, but I needed to! I then saw that another member had started a walking group some time ago, so I borrowed her idea! It’s worked well to keep me moving! I’m glad you like it. Becky

I just had to share this. This morning I woke up ready for my walk. I have to mention that today is Saturday, and I always sleep until mid morning. When I was younger I belonged to walking groups. Now when I join a walk the group is much younger and it’s hard to connect with someone just interested in enjoying the walk. Well I’m off to do my windows today. Have a nice day.
