Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I just ate a Hershey bar with almonds. When I said that I’m not thin, I meant that I’m not skinny. I weigh 120 pounds, so I’m just right, well maybe I could lose five more pounds.

How tall are you @darlingtondoll ? I am 5ft 3ins and normally weigh 114 lbs but since I have been on Lyrica I am struggling to stay at 117lbs. It's still not bad but I like to be 112lbs. Walking helps but the main thing is diet. I try to eat healthy food but my husband likes to buy M&Ms and other chocolates and he puts them in a bowl and then I eat them! I like chocolate candies more than cake and I can't stop eating them when he puts them out.

I used to be 5’3” but now I have shrunk to 5’2”. For many years, I was 110 pounds, but with increased age, I am up to 120. I eat one meal a day at noon and I rarely snack, except that chocolate bar today. I can’t exercise because of my spinal cord injury so I don’t burn many calories all day long.

I have shrunk half an inch. If you can't exercise are you walking? Is there not anything you can do? That's depressing for you.

Had to look hemp chocolate up...looks like light milk chocolate....hemp milk tastes like almond milk so I read While I like almond milk I only like dark chocolate. Isn't this the walking thread? Why do we always get back onto food lol Because we are too inactive?
Take a walk around your house....or better yet, if you can, a light jog between rooms every once in a while. BTW, no one asked but I am 5'7 and 107 lbs (pre Covid weight) due to exercise, diet and the fact that I cannot keep still too long. It's genes and the charts say I am
underweight but my build is narrow and there is nothing I can do about that. I was out the door at 7:25 this morning for my walk but it is so humid here now that the walk is not energizing. I was going to go past the 2.3 mile marker but was just putting one foot in front of the other on the way back. Today was windy which was a blessing and tomorrow will be windy too. The earlier I go the "cooler" it is.

Even if we open up he businesses in May, I hesitate going back to the germy gym. We shall see what transpires. Attempted to sprint a little but just couldn't work up the energy this humid humid day. Ugh.

@darlingtondoll That's still a good weight you dont want to lose to much. But 120 is doable for your height . I know you cant do to much in exercise but can you lift water bottles to keep you upper body in shape ? I also for my age do search a words and other challenging books .

@imallers I know that humidity is a killer . I hated it back in Pa. we had it but not as bad as down south Ga is as bad as Fla. Like I said out here its in the single digits in summer and 50% or so rest of year except when it rains which is seldom. I did go for my 2nd walk this afternoon

We had pouring rain this morning and my leg is still not good. Maybe better than yesterday and hopefully I can walk tomorrow.
Interestingly I see today that there are 2 petitions going around for management staff at the hospital to resign. I guess I wasn't the only one to react. Perhaps it will help to improve something.
