Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@becksbuddy & @lioness & @contentandwell. Happy Easter to you and to everyone on this walking site. It's a beautiful day in Maui, not too hot at a high of 79 today. We have a curfew this weekend from 11 pm to 5 am. I guess they want to make sure there is no late night partying. I don't think I can walk today because I have done something to my leg and I made it worse yesterday. Not sure what happened but it is at the back of my knee and going into my calf. I am missing my couple of therapists that I go to. They are a married couple and she is a chiropractor that does not snap and crack me and they both practice Active Release Technique therapy. They are really great and often avoid surgery in many of their patients. It will be so good when we can go to the hairdresser again and also my nails are so long now and I can't cut them because they had the powder polish, so the nails are too thick for my nail scissors. It's a good thing we have our walking because it definitely is a relaxing past time where you can let go of everything. And I am worried about my older daughter because she has had to keep working and has been in direct contact with a virus case the day before he was tested positive. Neither of them were wearing a mask. What are the chances do you think? Enjoy your Easter walks. Jennifer

@pollyanne ouch! Does using any heating ointment help with aches in that area where you feel pain? It must be difficult to suddenly not be able to move as freely as you were doing just earlier this week.

We are having beautiful weather here today, blue skies and no clouds. The sunrise this morning was full of reds, oranges and peaches; we usually have fog and overcast! The deer in the back field were highlighted against the sun which was really a beautiful thing to see. People are out walking as families now. Since so many activities were cancelled, residents have hung giant eggs in trees and on fences plus putting teddy bears in windows so that youngsters can watch for them. We live on a dead end beyond the last intersection so no one comes this far down. Fun to hear the squeals of the kids. Our neighbor and I created a Whimsy corner that is all decorated. Easter bonnets, eggs, and baby bunnies grouped around a tree stump with two prongs that look like bunny ears. I even put a face mask on the bunny! It's a good day for a walk.

@lioness, Thank you and Happy Easter to you and all as well. We had a huge drop in temps last night but I got geared up for an "extra bonus" walk today and then the blasted wind knocked out that idea. Read a spoof that someone wrote that they'd given each room of their house a new name: gym, post office, park...etc Maybe I'll see how that works today? smiles

Jude07 Thank you for your good wishes for Emma. It isn't a patient though. She is overseeing all the remodelling at the hotel where she is the GM and it was the electrician she was talking to face to face. Thank you for your prayers for both of them. It's surprising that construction work is still allowed but it is still going on around us here as well.

@gingerw Thanks. I have used Voltaren but I think I will give Tiger Balm a try. I think this will go away with rest for a day or two. I've had this before but not as extreme. I'd like to know what I did to cause it. It came on gradually later in the day.

@fiesty76. I was sent a floor plan of a friend's house showing where the wine was in each room! Funny!

@lioness Happy Easter! I think our calendar turned back to January! It’s cold and we have at least 6” of snow! No one is outside exercising! Me included. I think I’ll try a YouTube video later.
Today starts week #7. I’ll have to find some motivation for us
