Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Lioness, I truly salute your Mayor for taking action against those who refused to close. In our area, there are still far too many, both businesses and shoppers, who are not in compliance with our shelter in place guidelines.

I have been baking up a storm now that I am confined to the house. I just made banana bread for my husband and I plan to make a cake tomorrow. My husband loves Mexican food, and I made some enchiladas for him. I plan to cook some a Thai food when he finishes the leftovers from yesterday’s dinner. Everything I cook is kidney friendly.

Jane, My dentist will vouch for my sweet tooth and enchiladas are a favorite. What time shall I be there for dinner??? Smiles

I miss having friends come over for a dinner party. I always cook a kidney diet at my parties and everyone loves the food. It’s an easy diet to follow.

I have the same type of daughters, both wonderful human beings. Sometimes I wondered when they were teenagers. LOL

@pollyanne I generally say the jury was out for a long time but it finally came back with a good verdict! Sometimes I wondered what would be during those teen years.

OK! It’s your friendly drill sgt again. let’s move all the talk about food to this discussion in Just Want to Talk https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/recipes-food-tips-healthy-eating-more/. Or, we could call it Just Want to Eat! We must be doing really well in our walking group and needed to put back on all the pounds we lost! Let’s move ourselves over to the discussion on food tips, healthy eating, and more. Thank you!

@contentandwell . Haha, the jury is now out on my 15 year old granddaughter! She is painting her room with all sorts of pictures and patterns for something to do while stuck at home. She is artistic so hopefully it won't look too bad.
Back to walking. It is a lovely morning here and I slept well last night. I'm having a few problems right now which means some nights are not good but I'm off walking this morning again. I hope everyone is having better weather to walk now.

@pollyanne I am not walking today, there's light rain, and my hips and thighs hurt.
I have been following some exercise videos by Jenny McClendon. They seem to be the right level of exercise for me. I tried silver sneakers but that was geared more to people who are not used to exercising.

I didn't know that recumbent bike is not good for hip bursitis. I was going to get one. My bursitis really bothered me. My ortho doctor gave me a shot of something but it didn't help. Now I have to think of something else.

@mayofeb2020 I think I said I would get back to you about bursitis and the bike. I have been doing it, actually as long as for 40 minutes and it has not bothered my bursitis. I think I must have done a combination of things, or maybe I had done it even longer than 40 minutes. @pollyanne Are you still not using your exercise bike? Maybe you could work up gradually. That's what my sister did.

@patriciao You are right about the apple watch. I checked online and was told if I was not walking briskly enough to get my heart rate I should put it under "other". When I walk with my husband I do that. When I walk alone I go much more briskly so my heart rate gets up well into the range so I use "outdoor walking" then.

@macto I'm not sure if I mentioned this before in this discussion, but my orthopedic doctor said to do the bike five consecutive days and then to take two consecutive days off for recovery. That was after my knee replacement. Now I do not ride for five consecutive days because I do other exercises also.

@contentandwell thanks for the suggestion but I don't have an exercise bike. I do some stretches and a few weights. I have a lot of pain all over my body which started when I was a fitness instructor. It was during the days of the high impact classes and I suferred from overuse. It never went away plus with age now everything is wearing out. But I am still very active and I like to hike when I can. I also have some auto immune problems which don't help.

@fiesty76 I do too also our Gov. Newsom is on everyday upgrading something today it was small business. THe state has put back 50 million dollars for sba and it is in the form of grants . It was confusing to me but there is a lot to it .
