Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@pollyanne I was in a store today pharmacy and none of the workers wore gloves or facemask When I ask the manager about this he just said we disenfect and clean I ask about touching breathing the same air that someone sneezes in a person's face ,he didn't answer me .Alot of why people don't protect themselves is they see the lack of business wearing protective gloves and mask

My close friend, a widow with chronic health issues, lives in a large multi-family condo in Queens, NY. Queens has been described by Gov. Cuomo as the “epicenter of the epicenter”.

Although she can walk easily to places for medical care and the businesses she frequents, her neighborhood grocery and fruit and veggie mkts have now closed. She reports that online food deliveries are very slow and complicated to receive.

She just sent this very moving link to a video by Alicia Keyes: Empire State of Mind Part II. Enjoy.

In South Korea, everyone wears mask. Here's a link to why this country has the most success in dealing with this virus.

Excellent article on South Korea's actions, Mayofeb. How sad our top leadership did not heed these lessons from early on. I especially appreciated that So. Korea immediately unified its health system to contend with the virus, which Gov. Cuomo has now done for his state of NY.

Also notable to me is that the people there more trusted their leadership and scientists than sadly is happening here in the U.S. This is not a political time; this is a time of crisis where so many on the front lines are daily jeopardizing their own health and that of their loved ones to help the rest of us. I salute all in the U.S. who are doing all they can in whatever their field of expertise to faster bring this pandemic to a halt. We can do our parts by following guidelines and supporting each other through our online connections.

A few notes about face masks.
The increase in the general public buying surgical face masks has resulted in mask shortages for some health care workers.
- COVID-19: When should you wear a face mask? https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/covid-19-when-should-you-wear-a-face-mask/

If you are making face masks to donate to a hospital or organization, please call them first to see if they are accepting homemade mask. Some are not.
Also elastic is in high demand. Substituting with rubber bands is not a good idea because people may be allergic to latex.

To be effective, the mask must be put on and taken off correctly. @zeiracorp shared videos of how in this discussion:
- Donning and Removal of PPE https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/donning-and-removal-of-ppe/

@ihatediabetes started a discussion on Connect dedicated to making face masks. For those who wish to discuss face masks more, please do it here:
- Making facemasks https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/making-facemasks/

Now back to walking. What week are we on @becsbuddy?

Thank you for posting the link on when to wear face masks. I see too many people wandering around in the grocery stores who are obviously not sick but are wearing masks, As the link says they are not airtight unless it’s a surgical mask. I saw one guy taking it off, dangling on the ear to chat with someone, and then putting it back on with his hand to his face after picking up products from the shelves. It may be peace of mind to someone but it can make you careless.

The suggestion to have everyone in the country wear masks is ludicrous and will encourage a false sense of protection.

@rosemarya Just think, in a month there might be new growth and blooming flowers to observe on your walk! "April showers bring May flowers" and all that...just getting started a day early!

Looks like it's going to be another warm day so it's a "walk" day for me! As I get more mature 😉 the cold really bothers me. I'm still wearing a jacket when I see these young folks in short sleeve T shirts and shorts make me wish I am 20 again.... Well, maybe not! Take care you all and happy walking!

According to the doctors on tv this morning, people who are wearing masks are actually protecting you against them. They may not realize this, but the masks will not prevent the virus from entering through the blue masks. Viruses are very tiny and can pass through these flimsy masks. The wearer of the mask can help with the spread of the virus because breathing normally should keep the larger droplets from escaping into the air around the outside of the mask. It’s not a perfect solution.

I made a mask to wear when I have to go out. While it may not stop the virus from entering through the fabric, it’s a good reminder to me to keep my hands away from my face.
