Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

In South Korea, everyone wears mask. Here's a link to why this country has the most success in dealing with this virus.

@mayofeb2020 here is a link with an article about this:

@sueinmn Is your area densely populated? I can’t imagine them doing that on our street. As I commented once before, the minimum building lot in my town is 1.5 acres so not very dense.

@contentandwell If you can get people to wear them that would be great but I tried down here with no success as they say it's not airborne some people follow what's put out there I was in Walgreens today no one worker had gloves or mask on When I approached the manager he said we disinfect and wash all the time !

The manager at Walmart's reply doesn't make any sense. Why would all the hospital workers be asking for masks if it wasn't airborne. Spray that is invisible to the eye comes from our mouths when we speak. The masks would protect the workers in the store too. I saw the medical staff on TV in New York today all working without any protective gear. I don't think that this is what they signed up for. They should be able to depend on their country to keep them as safe as possible. It also appears that the early testing that South Korea were ready for made a huge difference to the spread of the virus. I was in South Korea last year and I was amazed at the bridges and structures that they had. Way ahead of this country. It was very pretty countryside there too. We should all be using masks but if we don't make them where do we get them. My husband has one which he will use if he shops during senior hour!

A few notes about face masks.
The increase in the general public buying surgical face masks has resulted in mask shortages for some health care workers.
- COVID-19: When should you wear a face mask? https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/covid-19-when-should-you-wear-a-face-mask/

If you are making face masks to donate to a hospital or organization, please call them first to see if they are accepting homemade mask. Some are not.
Also elastic is in high demand. Substituting with rubber bands is not a good idea because people may be allergic to latex.

To be effective, the mask must be put on and taken off correctly. @zeiracorp shared videos of how in this discussion:

@colleenyoung I agree with this video but my problem with this is If a person sneezes in your face you inhale the droplets this person doesn't know they gave covid and your not sure but end up with it then that's neglect on the other person but she didn't know This is my point of the mask question
