Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Okay, even though I can walk outdoors and maintaining safe distances with a couple friends, our 4 short streets are getting boring, so we're doing more sightseeing than walking most days. We are thrilled when a new cactus blooms, and we talk to the birds calling to each other from the trees. Im sure we are amusing to our neighbors, would love to sneak up to their windows and hear what they have to say about the four loony ladies. Yesterday one neighor called out "six feet, ladies" and I replied "no, we have eight feet - there's four of us." It took a moment for it to sink in, but we got a laugh.

@lioness. Hahaha, I'm watching it on TV too! OC finally released city by city statistics on covid 19. We have 33 infected in our city of 280 thousand. Yikes!!!

The numbers are getting very bad. We have 120 in Honolulu and the latest on Maui where I am is 14. They have only just made it mandatory for visitors to quarantine for 14 days and they only closed the pools a few days ago. I cannot understand people that are still flying in. They expose themselves on the flight and in the airports and then the numbers go up. Plus what can they do when they are here. Nothing is open. Then they don't follow the rules. There are still so many that need to realise how serious this is. I have family and friends in the UK and it sounds even worse there and there are still people ignoring the problem. It is beginning to look as though we need martial law to stop those that don't care. It's the same in Canada too where my family is.
However, I managed my walk this afternoon even though I seem to have done something to my leg behind my knee. It started hurting after I walked yesterday. I didn't do any stretches today. I expect it will soon pass.
I'm sorry I missed the mercy ship today. May God bless them in their work.

@sueinmn That's great that you are walking with a group while maintaining a distance. My sister-in-law has been driving to where my niece lives and walking with her and her daughter, maintaining the 6' distance. People are being so respectful of the distance on my street, even the kids on bicycles.
I'm not sure if I mentioned this yesterday, but when we took our walk we discovered that someone had taken the time to write in chalk at the end of each drive, a hopeful or cheery message. Here is the one from our driveway. I thought that was such a nice gesture.

I got in a great walk outside yesterday. Today I lifted weights inside and I'm going to do restorative yoga with my sister via Facebook live!

@jodeej That sounds good. Is there a link you could send me for restorative yoga? I hope it's not too long, the yoga at my club is all about an hour and a half which I find too long for me - I get bored. Restorative yoga was suggested to me by my physiatrist (doctor of physical medicine) but the only time they have it at my club is Wednesday morning at 5:45! Sorry, I will not be there!

Jk... This must be a movement going around. I saw similar messages on my walk yesterday too... Northwood (that's my village) strong, compassion, social distancing, strength, love, etc. And drawings of hearts. Our city's count of infection went up to 36 from 33. Our Mayor said in not so many words that the residents could have caught the virus in other cities other than our own. I need the walk to keep my sanity and health, cutting down to one 30-40 walk, slowly as long as my legs cooperate, instead of 2 walks. Praying I could keep it up.

Just finished today's walk in a light mist - but it isn't a problem because the temp is 70F, a welcome change from the record highs of 90's and even 100 late last week. While walking we heard church services start over the PA at the RV park across the road - so the people can attend from their own patios at a safe distance. People are becoming SO creative to stay connected.
