Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I think someone is a show-off!
I went to the store today but I certainly didn't walk. Empty shelves all over the store. It is absolute insanity. I can't believe how selfish and thoughtless people are. All this fear and panic, WHY?

@jakedduck1 I think that more people have been shopping because we all want to be stocked up so that we don't have to keep going out there to the stores. The fewer times we have to go shopping the less chance there is to spread the virus. Because it has been squeezed into a shorter time than usual, some stores haven't kept up with it. I believe that some stores are doing a better job than others. Costco says they are constantly replenishing and are coping with keeping up with the demand so maybe try shopping there.

I found this 3 ingredients soup online. Super easy, 2 cans of black beans drained, one can of diced tomato, one cup of broth or water. (I used a little more water), 1/4 teaspoon crushed red peppers, cooked 15 to 20 minutes. I added some cumin too. I put the soup in my Vitamix blender and it came out nice and smooth. A stick blender would work too. Season to taste.. I crumble some totilla chips on top.

WOW, 3 ingredients now your talking my language. Only downside is there’s so much salt in canned foods but the simplicity overrules the salt.

Well that is true but it depends whether you have high blood pressure or not. If you do then you can use dried beans and fresh tomatoes etc. but I'm not expecting too much from someone who can only pick up a candy dish. However, I am encouraged that you know there is high sodium in canned goods. I think there is more to you than meets the eye. Make the soup! You will be glad.

@jakeduck1 Jake - Take a look for low sodium/no salt added canned goods. Easier to find if you have access to a large supermarket, coop or natural foods store, and a little more pricy but still an easy, economical meal. It can be harder tofind low-sodium beans, but you can also dump those in a strainer and rinse, rinse, rinse before using to reduce the salt somewhat. And if used with no-salt tomatoes and very low salt broth, you have a winner! We top our soups with crumbled cheese - we especially like Mexican-style queso fresco - for a protein and calcium boost.
Since you watch your salt intake, what do you use to season your food?

I use the no salt added canned black beans and diced tomatoes. But now I can't find them in the store due to shortage, I rinse the black beans well before cooking and added more water to the recipe. I don't any salt and the soup didn't turn out salty.

The sun was out this morning so I got moving, slowly but surely. Actually I was painless, I would have walked longer because it was warmer outside than inside my home. I did managed to reached 5000 steps! Fitbit said I nailed my goal! Weather reports said it is going to be wet for the rest of the week. Yuck! Made some Cuban spicy black bean soup for lunch, waiting to video chat with my children when everyone is ready.

@mayofeb2020 Dreary here today too, with predictions for snow. This is not conducive to walking outdoors for me.
I'm glad you were able to make your step goal. I rarely do that now. When I walk outside it is with my husband and he doesn't like to go as far as I would.
Your soup sounds interesting. I am planning to have soup for lunch too.

I managed to walk around Lake Calhoun on Saturday with my brother, 3.2 miles. I think I jumped to week 12. Yesterday, smaller walk, but at least I got out!

How wonderful. There's a man made lake in my city with ducks and water fowls, but I haven't been out so I don't know if there are people still walking around it. It's not a very nice day today, so I'll walk later when it's warmer. Rain projected all week. 😩
