Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@Erinmfs

This is fun, I'd like to share my smartphone data on walking. I try to walk several days a week, the 6000 recommended steps. I'm trying to walk briskly as was recommended.

@Erinmfs this is great! Is it an app or did it come with the phone? Maybe you can share the name of the app so others can get it!

Despite constant protests from my hip and legs I managed to walk once around the block for 21 minutes. It was cold and windy, dark clouds overhead. But it felt good breathing fresh air. I'll try to do it again in the afternoon if weather permits. Otherwise will follow some exercises on YouTube. Hope everyone is safe and sound. Chin up and carry on.

@mayofeb2020 I also got my walk in just now! We have a dusting of snow on the surrounding Hills, and it was nice to watch that as the fresh air came through the valley. It is fairly chilly and they are calling for possible rain and more snow showers today. But my walk is done and that's a good thing. Coming back into the house it felt so hot and stuffy in here. But my cat loves it, and is sitting on the windowsill in the laundry porch in the Sun when it shows up.

I will get out before my appointment, stress release, even though it is wet and cold!

Last night I received a message from my back therapist's office to say they are closed for the next 2 weeks and I have a feeling this is just the beginning. Well at least I don't have to worry about whether I should keep my appointment or not. There are 4 cases of the virus on Maui at present so we are at a point where it could be contained well.
But we still have our walking and I am looking at it as my chance for freedom from all of this stress and I think we should treat it as that and take some deep breaths and let go. I know it is not so easy in some parts of this country but March 21st is the first day of spring and the weather will hopefully improve. So hang in there, keep your goals in mind and enjoy your freedom!
I am doing well with my walking and will set off again soon. I have added a few light weights to a couple of exercises when I finish my walk and that should help with strength. Some stretches are also a good idea. Have a great freedom day!

The latest count in Hawaii is 7 cases as of this morning. All infections have come from somewhere else. None are transmitted locally. While our warm weather may prevent the virus from spreading, air conditioning might undo the benefits of warm weather. We still need to be diligent!

Did you know that there is now a group for getting the latest I do on covid-19 and sharing with other members? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/covid-19/. I’m sure we all have questions about staying safe, what we can and cannot do. I can tell you that walking or exercise at this time is still very important (just not in large groups)!

Thank you Becky. I will check that web site out. I was just looking at various information online to find more accurate figures. I will check this out. On reading some of the information and details, I find it incredible how some people can behave so irresponsibly.
