Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi Merry. I have been a person of faith all my life, which does not mean I am a religious person but a very spiritual person. I believe in a Creator of this universe and I can’t get enough of the beauty of nature and all the wonders that are there to uplift us. Einstein ,before he died ,said that he was wrong all of his life and that now he believes that there is a master plan for our existence. Armed with this faith keeps me positive on moving on , with buddy Berthas help!

JK Thank you for your kind words. The prednisone is a mean drug, it has a rare side effect called avascular necrosis which causes the ball of your hip joint to die and slowly shrivel up and I have it in both hips. The only saving grace is I do need have any pain except when I attempt too walk- hence my reliance on my buddy Bertha. I am not a candidate for hip replacement because of my heart. Once I have my heart condition corrected I’ll be able to have my hip replaced. In the mean time to be able to join a group likes this is a great avenue of keep me positive. One must play the cards they are dealt and hold the faith. Good luck!

@beachbum80 how much prednisone are you taking? I am wondering if the hip problems that you mention might be in my future.

Love it, Lioness, that you are rewarding yourself with a bit of t.v. for your good exercise efforts! Small rewards after completing any dreaded task can perk my spirits like nothing else.

Not sure how to post the weekly report without replying to another poster but I made the Tues, Thurs walks and just returned from an early morning walk in the less crowded Walmart.

Was told that store had been out of hand sanitizers, rubbing alcohol and face masks for three weeks...really surprised but guess the warehouses are running low as well. Hope we can all stay at our best and healthiest during this time.

I have walked almost everyday this week. Some efforts were a combination of stop to talk with a neighbor [still getting to know everyone in this side of little town], or solid walking. But it was all moving. I love the freshness of the air and the bursts of color starting. The wild daffodils are a very bright yellow against winter die-off and dark green coming forth. Scrub jays, red-headed woodpeckers, a few doves. We have seen the first of the turkey buzzards, so we know Spring is on her way!

@gingerw- I was out sunbathing on my back deck a couple of days ago and this morning I woke up to snow. But the sun is as strong now as it is in August so it's melting quickly! Beautiful descriptions.

@1065408 Grocery store works!

Hi Becky. Here’s my walking total for week one. 48 minutes but not a true picture. That includes 28 grocery store minutes which isn’t normal, leaving generally 5 minutes other days. Six days a week I walk 4 minutes to the building lobby to get mail. These numbers I don’t count as walking minutes. Will strive for better.

1st week was active. Managed to walk at least 30 minutes each day and added a little Yoga for Everyone and body weight exercises a couple of days. Yesterday, while not my usual brisk walk and with periods of sitting, I did manage to walk over 12,000 steps following the golfers playing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Good luck to everyone next week!

To all walkercizers: I’m reporting in on my not very good week. I’ve gotten out to walk, but not as much as I’m used to. All I want to do is sleep. 😴😴. My Endocrinologist says I’ll feel sleepy until my body starts making enough steroids again. But I’ll keep on keeping on as @lioness says!

@becsbuddy you can only what you can do, don’t beat yourself up over it.
I am beginning to wonder if I should continue going to my health club. I think I will, armed with antiseptic hand wipes. The gym has paper towels all over with spray bottles of sanitizer to wipe down the equipment you used when you are done with each machine but I plan to start wiping it down before I use it too. There are also Purell dispensers in numerous locations. I am not generally very close to other people. Now I will make sure that I am not.

JK. I started on prednisone in Jan. of 2016 for an attack on my kidney. I started on 80mg for a long time then had no results so that they gave me mycofenolate along with the prednisone.l maintained this for a year and stopped the mycofenolate because the kidneys responded well to the treatment and during that year they began to titrations the prednisone and in July of 2017 i finally stopped it. But by this time the myopathy was well on is way with my left side most badly affected, my left arm , hand and the leg below the knee. Both feet feels like I am walking on bubble wrap and on Jan.2019 I started to get hip problems. I had an mri in Jan. of this year and it revealed that both hips were beginning to shrivel and I guess dry rot is in process. The worst culprit in this whole affair was the prednisone. Large doses over long time. Only one in a million suffer this hip problem and I have it in both, why couldn’t that be on the lotto
