Why is my blood sticky with a glossy look?

Posted by butterflie @butterflie, Feb 14, 2020

My blood is sticky and has a glossy look to it. I have had this all my life. I can't find a doctor that will treat this problem. My health started to decline when I hit 37 years old. I am currently 45 years old.

Hello @butterflie and welcome to Mayo Connect.

When you say, "My blood is sticky and has a glossy look to it" I'm wondering how you are aware of this. Is it when you cut yourself and you see this? Has your doctor run blood tests to check for your hemoglobin and iron levels?

I cut my finger at school in shop class when I was 13 years old and on my way to the sink to rinse my finger I noticed when my blood was between my fingers it was sticky. My mom told my doctor something wasn't right and he said I would be fine. I ask doctors about it and they weren't worried. The last 8 1/2 years I have been very ill. What should I do?

Also when my blood dries it lost shiny and it looks glittery also

Hello again, @butterflie

When you say, "The last 8 1/2 years I have been very ill" can you explain a bit more about how you feel?

Have any doctors done blood tests?

@butterflie Welcome to connect Are you drinking lots of water? Not drinking enough will change the normalcy of your body fluids If your Dr can't find anything look for a hematologist These are only suggestions for you

When I look up my symptom it keeps coming back as Hugh's Syndrome.

Do you have any reccomendations of any good doctors at the mayo clinic?

@butterflie
Your blood begins to coagulate changing from a liquid to a gel like substance in about 30 seconds or so which probably caused the stickiness.

Ask your doctor for a blood test. Coagulation problems can be easily diagnosed with just a simple blood test which should put your mind at ease for wether or not you have Hughes Disease.

Hello @butterflie, If you would like to consult with a Mayo doctor, here is the information to schedule an appointment. https://www.mayoclinic.org/appointments

You just tell them your problem and they will connect you with the right specialist. I am wondering, however, what the results of your blood tests have been. Have you sought the opinion of a hematologist in your area?
