7% Saline Solution

Posted by thumperguy @thumperguy, Jan 7, 2020

Got a supply of 7% vials and got a real jolt in my throat when I began inhaling it. However I quickly adapted to it and was able to finish the vial. Within a few minutes I was coughing and bringing stuff up - a first. I never had a timely response to 0.9. Bottom line: I guess the 7% solution is...well the real solution. Not to be confused with the Sherlock and Sigmund thing. Forgive my corny effort at mirth. Don

@diane36 I get mine with and without an Rx. It is slightly cheaper with the prescription, but occasionally I will see it for less on line and order a box. MY local pharmacy usually takes 2-3 days to get it from their supplier, so I like to keep a little extra on hand.

When I see my doctor soon, his response to writing prescription will determine how I get it. Thanks for your help.

If you get it from a pharmacy, use a goodrx coupon. The price of my pescription at Walgreens was $44 without goodrx and $14 with it.

It is used at a large group of pharmacies. If you go to the website, you can see the pharmacies that accept it for saline. (Sodium chloride) Goodrx.com Call one of the listed pharmacies and see if they accept it and what it would cost in Canada. That"s what I would do.

Congratulations on your new family member! My dog does so much for me. She keeps me sane. It took a while to figure out where I could walk her safely during this scary time but I finally figured it out and I no longer feel like a rabbit surrounded by hawks during our walks. Enjoy your new bff!

Thank you Rita. I am really enjoying having a young playful dog (she is two). My last two dogs were rescues that were seniors and mainly just wanted to cuddle a lot. Minnie gives me a good excuse to walk every day and run around the house. What kind of dog do you have?

How much does everyone nebulizer per session of the 7%? I can only get it in 4ml vials, and it takes me 3 of those to really get the gunk going. My pulmo has only written me a script for ONE 4ml vial per session, which just won't do it for me. Do you any of you use more? Is there some issue with doing 8 to 12 ml - is it too harsh to do that? (My 3% used to come in 15ml vials.) I don't start really getting the gunk up until 8 ml, would love to know if it takes anyone more than one vial. Thanks!!

Hi Sherri - Too bad we can't share. Only 2-3 ml is all I need to produce a lot of mucus. But what about if you begin you neb with the .9%, then finish afterward with the 7%? Just thinking out loud here. What do any of you other 7 percenters think? I would think over time 8012 ml of 7% might be irritating to throat, and possibly your lungs. A question for your doc?

Oh, that's a super idea Sue - thanks!! I'm sure I can get it all moving with the 3% and then go in for the kill with the 7% 🙂 ! I did make a Zoom appointment with the doc to discuss, but I am the only person she even prescribed 7% for, so I knew I would get better feedback here from actual users! I will just go into the appointment now armed with suggestions - she is really good about going with what I ask as long as it makes sense.

I’ve never heard of using more than a 4 ml ampule of saline (I use 7%) at a time. The nebulizer looks like it is intended for 4 ml as well. I find that I don’t cough up a lot of gunk every day when using the nebulizer but that sometimes I cough it up later on in the day. My respirologist said that this happens to some of his other patients. Although I would prefer limiting my coughing to when I’m at home using the nebulizer, I’m just glad that my lungs are getting cleared.
Good luck!
