Neuropathy & Exercise

How have you received enough physical exercise while dealing with neuropathy?? Do you walk in spite of the condition; tiptoe to get around; particular exercise program, etc.?

Hi all. This is a friendly reminder to stay on topic. Please see Guideline #4 of the Community Guidelines https://connect.mayoclinic.org/page/about-connect/tab/community-guidelines/

Tangents will happen. We're human after all and conversations often diverge. In this case, it's animals and pets that have inadvertently grabbed the attention of a few members. Indeed it is often pets that keep us active, so one could argue that it is still on topic. However, for people seeking advice on appropriate exercise for neuropathy, the number of non-relevant email notifications may be a nuisance.

Now, back to the topic at hand. What exercise adaptations are you making during the stay home rule?

Gulp! @colleenyoung, Guilty as charged... Thank you for the reminder...I tend to go off on tangents so "naturally" that often I start a thought, travel to the ends of the universe and then forget whatever point I was attempting to make in the first place. Sigh. Thanks for the link...will check it out and promise to work harder to stay "on topic" whatever that topic may be. Hugs and Smiles for all you do to keep this creative, rambunctious membership on track. Are You getting any sleep????

Back to adaptations for exercise: Fortunate to have a car but saving the gas to parks for any "emergency run" so circling the house on inclement days and walking the neighborhood weather permitting. Not a record but happy that I've kept my 3x's/week walking goal since January.

Are you psychic, @lioness? My "scheduled" days are Tues/Thurs and Sat with a few bonus days thrown in. Today was a "bonus" day and am happy to report that on the after lunch ramble saw several children in diff yards playing, 5 vehicles drove down streets I was on and while very chilly, the walk was a boost both for the exercise and also for seeing more "humans". Also...bonus points for sweeping and blowing out my garage in anticipation of my 1st local grocery delivery scheduled for Wed...woulda' thought after dreamin' about radishes they would have been included on my list but tomatoes were the only "reds" in deference to the greens, yellows and oranges...maybe next time...another freeze predicted tonight...brrr

I began my spring garden chores several days ago. That first day was the hardest on my body. My thighs were really sore, so I took a muscle relaxer that night. The worst pain was the burning in my feet and ankles. But since then I've had less neuropathy pain each day. Last night the pain wasn't much worse than usual. And I told my therapist today (via Zoom) that I'm finding myself less depressed each day, as well. I don't know what to expect as the gardening progresses. Will it hurt more? Or the same as it's been? Or will it hurt less? Time will tell. I was supposed to see the neurosurgeon to talk about treating my pain, but it got bumped off the calendar. I hope that I'll be able to see her soon.

Congratulations John! A much needed reminder. I am receiving over 30 emails, but most chatter is of a social nature, which is good, but more suited forr Facebook or Instagram. Personally I am pleased to report, that I rode my exercise yesterday for over 30 minutes and have set myself target to reach 90 minutes, non stop by January next , when I turn 90 years. 5 of my sons will ride with me. Neuroplasticity is the answer, as my Peripheral-neuropathy problems ARE reducing , but slowly, every day. My balance, walking aand sleeping. Best wishes, again, from Australia.

Hi, @lioness, So psychic dearie, vbg, how much of my first food order will arrive? Mine is coming from a locally owned grocery called United. Would be helpful if you could give me a hint on quantity so I can estimate the number of steps I'll be taking. Feet really "speak" to me if I use them too long at a time.

@jim, I can tell a difference in pain with the feet an calves this year as I start gardening chores. I'm spending less time than a year ago and like you have no idea if this will get worse, stay the same or improve as the season progresses. My appt. was also cancelled with my neurologist.
