Back pain between shoulder blades

Posted by davidadams123 @davidadams123, Nov 12, 2019

So last night I was bending down to pet my dog. And suddenly I get this really sharp pain in between my shoulder blades. It just crippled me. I could stand or anything, but five minuets later I could walk again but now it hurts to breathe and everything. What’s going on?

@davidadams123 Welcome to Mayo Connect. We are here to help each other with support and experiences. We are patients, caregivers, family members, but we are not medical professional who can diagnose or give advice. That must have been quite a surprise to have this sudden pain! Sometimes I have had a similar experience when I turn or twist the wrong way, and a muscle complains. When you say "it hurts to breathe and everything", is it taking any kind of a breath or just a deep breath? Were you uncomfortable resting last night afterward? If you can tolerate NSAIDS, did you take anything last night or this morning, and if so, did it alleviate the discomfort at all? Have you tried a heating pad or ice pack? Topical pain lotion? I realize this seems like a laundry list of questions, but I am tossing out many options. You might have tweaked a muscle and if so, it takes a bit of time for it to return to normal. Are you dealing with any other physical issue right now that might be interfering with your experience from last night?

Any kind of breath. And yes I’ve taken ibuprofen. I should alert you I am 14 and in 9th grade.

@davidadams123. Have you talked with your parents or guardian(s)? Pain that acute can often signify some sort of injury, but a medical professional would need to be seen in order to determine if that is true. With the pain going on overnight now, has it got any better? Does movement make it hurt again? It may be best to talk to someone and be seen to rule out any sort of injury.

It hurts 24/7 and they know. But they are refusing to take me anywhere

@davidadams123 do you have a school counselor you can talk to, or a school nurse or a teacher?

I want to commend you for being so brave. You seem to be in tune with your body and not afraid to ask for suggestions. How long has the shortness of breath and this pain been going on? Are there any other symptoms? Do you or your friends vape or smoke?
These are important questions that you should talk to your school nurse or a teacher about. Can you do that? I care about you. You are brave for reaching out.

Have your parents taken your to get your spine x-ray? Those desks at school suck especially if there might be something wrong with your spine. Not to scare u but she ended up after 2 years of doctors tell me she's fine. The fourth doctor found a 37 degree angle on her spine. Your school nurse should be able to see it if your parents won't take u. Try the nurse first.

Your nurse at school will know what to look for
