Need help and advice. Where to stay for transplant review in JAX?

Posted by wendylsmith44 @wendylsmith44, Aug 7, 2019

Coming in to Jacksonville on August 14th. Gabriel house has a waiting list.

My best friend has been asked to arrive August 13th begin a 7 to 14 day process to receive a lung transplant. Not being able work due to illness we anticipated staying at Gabriel house and we found out they have waiting list.Everyone who said they would help has disapeard.

Is there any resources???
I'm frieghtented that without lodging that this means Kevin's chances at life are in jeopardy.
Plz message me as time is not on our side with any information. we live hours away and need to stay in Jacksonville for this process

I don't know if it works the same way but the Gift of Life house in Rochester, MN partners with hotels in the area for special pricing while you are on the wait list. It wasn't a lot more than the price of the house.
The time spent before and after surgery varies greatly from person to person. So if they have someone scheduled to stay for 4 weeks, they may leave after 3 weeks, opening up spots sooner.
There are also scheduling mix ups and last minute cancellations that can work in your favor. Get on the waiting list. Don't lose hope!

Hi @wendylsmith44 that must be frightening to be without lodging and the appointment only a week away.

You may have noticed I removed your phone number from your post. I did this because this is a public forum and I didn't want you to receive unwanted spam.

I'd like to share contact information for Mayo Jacksonville as they may be able to have ideas about what you can do: https://www.mayoclinic.org/about-mayo-clinic/contact#jump2

I'd also like to tag fellow Connect member @windwalker as she goes to Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and may be able to share tips or ideas.

Back to you @wendylsmith44 has your friend had a chance to discuss this with the department they are seeing? What have they said?

Thank you and feel free to share. Gabrielle house gave two phone numbers to Wyndham hotel resorts and red roof.
Got this community support group from googling this morning trying to reach out and find out as much information as I can.

It's very frightening and humbling all at the same time.

Kevin just turned 50 and has custody of his seven-year-old grandson and in the end you find out that the people who say they will help you we're just saying this.

He's a good man a great dad and a wonderful grandfather the Lord will make away I have faith.
thank you for being the first to reply and taking your time to care about us and our journey that lies ahead.

@wendylsmith44 We stayed at the Hampton Inn on Beach Blvd. They gave us a Mayo patient discount but I don’t remember how much. We also stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on the Mayo campus but it was expensive but walking distance to the Mayo buildings.

Someone canceled at Gabriel house and they called us. That in its self is a blessing. 55.00 for first night then 40 a nite there after.

Even at that we're not able to afford. There is travel, lodging, food expense.

Any information is very much welcomed.
I'm feeling like a failure that this has came down to 💰.

But of course giving up is not an option

@wendylsmith44 Do you have any family to assist you in a loan? Is there any group that Kevin belongs to that can help out? A professional organization he might be involved with, or a religious community he can ask for help from? I am not sure if there is any program at Mayo to turn to, but it wouldn't hurt to ask!

@wendylsmith44, I see the room availability at Gabrielle House as a positive beginning. It is definitely something good to start off this journey.
Will you be Kenny's caregiver? Will you be in Jacksonville during the evaluation appointments? If so, I hope that you will be able to accompany him to his appointments. A 2nd set of ears is always best.. You will have opportunity to discuss your financial situation during those appointments.

Here is a link that I want to share - Creating a financial plan includes: Understand the costs, Insurance, Financial assistance.
