~ Hippo ~

Does anyone else feel like a hippopotamus when they go from sitting on the floor to a standing position? I had a knee replacement 6 years ago and a revision 5 years ago, and except for when it's going to rain, my knee is in good shape. (I'm a great barometer) But, if I have to sit on the floor for any reason, well, to say it's embarrassing to get up is an understatement. I go over on my hands and knees, grab a sturdy piece of furniture, and pull myself up. Oi Vey! I would never sit on the floor with anyone around except my family or a close friend.

@amberpep I guess I’m a fellow hippopotamus. I do get up slightly differently than you though. Facing the floor I push up with my arms and then stand. As you do, I have to get on my knees and that’s miserable on the tile floor in the kitchen.
I have not noticed barometric differences, I’ll have to try to be more aware of that.

Hi @amberpep - Count me in too! I'm 68 years old and have had 2 TKRS. Both were very successful. Like you, I get achy when the weather changes. As far as the floor goes - I try never to sit on it! If I do, I have to shift to a facing downward position on my knees and use the furniture to rise. It is not comfortable. I'm happy I don't need to sit on the floor. I can imagine if I were a preschool teacher or needed to be on the floor it would be a problem. Do you need to be able to sit on the floor?

That’s exactly what I do. My knee replacement was 6 yes ago. Kneeling on the knee replacement is pretty uncomfortable, but haven’t noticed the weather affecting it. Glad I’m not the only hippo. 🤪

I found my people! Hippo is my floor to standing maneuver. So glad to read of others experiencing the same plus weather sensitive knees. Content and well, thank you for sharing your method. I will try that although my shoulders (which need replacements) might not stand the strain. It would be instructive to hear from someone (with knees replaced) who has little or no problem rising from the floor and how they managed to achieve that,

@cmael @marlynn My husband is amazed at my "getting up" maneuver. He says he couldn't do that!
If your arms are a problem it may not be possible for you. I go to a gym and have strengthened my arms a bit.

These posts made me laugh--because they ring true! My left TKR was only 17 weeks ago and the very idea of being on the floor gives me nightmares. My right knee isn't very happy that it has done extra work these last weeks so I'm not sure which knee would make getting up more difficult! But I am a firm believer in upper body workouts--strong arms helped in the weeks after surgery. So I'll keep doing my modified planks and swimming and look forward (hmmm??) to the day I have to kneel or get up from the floor.
