More thyroid issues??? ( hypo to hyper)

Posted by mcmurf2 @mcmurf2, Jul 15, 2019

I posted several months ago with my labs and symptoms and history. Today, I got another epidural in my neck. When they checked my BP, it was low.. all 3 readings. ( now, I"ve tried to get into my health portal for that hospital and it is being a butt.. won't let me in to get you the exact numbers), But they were in the 96??/ 60?? range. It has never been this low. Also,, I"ve lost 43 lbs since last fall. NOT trying. I can't do anything but sit around due to my neck issue so it is not like I"m working it off.... starting to get a red flag. I also sweat a lot.. granted,, it IS hot and humid now,, but I can lay butt naked in front of the AC and sweat. I also take a lot of showers. ( and my feet are cold). Had to move my primary dr appt from this Thursday to next week. Don't see the endo for my follow up for another 2 weeks... should I be concerned??? Also get headaches but think this is due to my neck.. they stay for 4-5 days... meds don't help.

@mcmurf2 I'm pleased to hear that you will be seen at Mayo. I look forward to hearing about your appointment there.

@mcmurf2 That’s great that you are moving forward and have appointments, but probably agonizing to have to wait so long. When my cirrhosis was discovered and I called Mass General to get an appointment it was also a couple of months out but I had them put me on the “wait list” and ended up getting in much sooner. I presume Mayo must do wait lists also, make sure you are on it, and if you do, just to make sure you don’t fall through the cracks give them a call every now and then to see if anything sooner has opened up.
Recently I made an appointment with a local doctor and I was supposedly put on the wait list, but being in agony I called to see if he could possibly see me sooner. He had two openings and I had not been called!

got ONLY the T3 results today. I"m down to 6.9. I don't know why the rest of the thyroid was not posted. I do see the endo on friday (IF it is not freezing rain)..

so had my Endo appt today and also my ultra sound for the nodule on the thyroid. Nodule is unchanged. now. Doc says 'Your labs are a mess'. so, she ordered more labs.. FINALLY testing for Graves. Will know the outcome next wed. She gave me 3 options. 1. go on a med that may take 18 months for final results and only has a 20% success rate. ( can't remember the name). 2. kill the thyroid with radio active iodine. ( 3 month results) 3. surgically remove thyroid. (instant results.). number one is out! I"ve suffered over a year already. Two will probably be the option as it is winter and not much to do anyway. I am already scheduled for rotator cuff surgery on Jan 8th soooooo... hum,,, no need for 2 surgeries huh?

I can only give my experience, but not an opinion on your thyroid. I was given no options, as they found the nodules on my thyroid while doing an ultrasound on my artery. I was told I had to have the surgery, which I did and now I live on Synthroid. During the surgery they damaged a vocal chord, which is common, as it is so close, and no voice specialist has been able to help me. I can no longer sing and sometimes my voice can barely do the job. But I keep talking anyway. I have had a sinus drainage ever since which has been maybe ten years and I sleep on two pillows and suck on a cough drop for relief. I cancelled my rotator cuff replacement in both shoulders because I can live with it at this level and I can't stand another surgery. My granddaughters will get my dishes down from the higher shelves.
I don't wash windows much. And I use a lot of IceyHot at night. I am sick of more meds that make me feel drugged. Dorisena

wow.. and I actually put more thought into my choices and have changed my decision to surgery.. sigh....guess I"ll have more time to think about it. As for my (2nd rotator cuff surgery), I 'm not looking forward to the recovery, but with my goals and job,, would like to be pain free. I need knee surgery in the future and he won't do THAT until my shoulders can hold me up on crutches... ( sigh again). Is your voice horse or tired???...??? or what exactly is going on if you don't mind me asking?

I remind you that there is no guarantee that you will be pain free as a result of surgery, but perhaps if you are young you may feel a lot better. I had two knees replaced and the first one was pain free after a year, but now I have pain sometimes in the evening. The second surgery was pretty good until I had the back surgery and now I have pain often. I maintain a regular active life at age 84. I see people in church who never got off their walkers. I'll admit I don't have bad pain, but it is still difficult to put my socks on. Since the pain has lessened in my shoulders and I don't take anything for it, I don't need to have the ability to work hard as in the past, and so I am putting off shoulder surgery and living an easier lifestyle, not carrying heavy loads and such. My throat is hoarse at times but I also have sinus allergies which can make the throat sore. They put a camera down my throat some years ago to diagnose the paralyzed vocal chord. I had to give up choir. I do no speak in public because my voice quivers. They wanted to try surgery and put a piece in to shove the vocal chord over a little. I said, no thanks. I am heartbroken but at least I can stay on my feet and walk short distances. I manage my home alone. That's life! I would like to have better balance and sometimes I work on that. You would never know by looking that I am 84, so I am doing better than most. Dorisena.

@mcmurf2 I have two TKRs and never used crutches, I just do not handle them well. I have used a walker and then gone straight to walking unaided. You may never need crutches.

I checked with my daughter and it has been almost nine years since I had my thyroid removed. I complained about low thyroid for years and I did after the surgery, but now the doctors say I must stay at my lower dose to prevent risk of more cancer. Well, it can't be thyroid cancer again because it is gone!
So that is a main reason why I avoid sugar because it does feed cancer cells. This was my second cancer. My first cancer was a breast cancer lump which was removed and I had 42 radiation treatments. If I just had more energy to do more work, not as much as in the past, I would be quite happy. I have to blame the diabetes for some of that, I suppose. Dorisena
