Parkinsons Back Pain

Posted by jkerlz @jkerlz, Jul 2, 2019

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with information in regards to back pain and Parkinson's. My mother is currently taking the below

L-Dopa for Parkinson Disease. 6 pills a day since 2012.
VCFlor (pramipexol 0.5mg) 2 days a day.

The rest is to decrease blood pressure.
Azilsartan 80mg 1 pill a day.
Bisoprolol 2,5mg 2 pills a day.
Rosuvastatin 5mg 1 pill a day.

Would any of these or a combination of these cause severe back pain?

Thank you for your time!

Hello @jkerlz and welcome to Mayo Connect,

How wonderful that you are looking out for your mom and trying to help her with her back pain. As you may be aware, Mayo Connect is not a place where you can receive a diagnosis or an answer to a health problem. Most of us on Connect are patients, like your mother.

As to your question about back pain, I'm wondering: has this been addressed with her doctor? Has she had chronic back pain in the past? Is she active or is she sedentary most of the day?

I would encourage you to talk with her doctor about this pain and see if she can get a diagnosis and perhaps some help through physical therapy.

Other than the back pain, how is your mom doing with her Parkinson's diagnosis?

I have had back pain ever since I realized something was not right with me: 6-9 months before I was "officially" diagnosed with PD. Exercise, such as BIG Therapy, Yoga, and swimming, has helped. Walking has not helped, it actually heightens the pain (at least for me). I have not discovered any meds, including over the counter meds, that can help. Besides asking the doc, I would seek assistance from a PT.
For whatever its worth...

Hi, @lsdempsey - thanks for sharing what exercises have helped with the back pain and which have not.

I'd like to tag @sainath @leftylucy @mshoggie @susan62 @justiniano @namaste88, who also may be interested in this topic on Parkinson's and back pain,

Will you share more about the BIG therapy and what it entails, @lsdempsey?

BIG Therapy is the movement portion of LSVT BIG and LOUD Therapy. You can google it. There are several different movements (exercises) that you do to help you move bigger - walking with bigger steps, swing you arms, etc. It also has helped stretch my back out.
