My donor daughter, my husband and I went to the Transplant Picnic on Sunday. It was a warm and humid day. Although we had rain on the way down going through St Paul, and rain on the way home, there was no rain at the picnic. The food was good. There was another booth to get ice cream and they had activities like hair painting, bean bag toss, pictures with super heroes and group pictures-different transplant categories, donors and caregivers. It was a good day!
@cmael I think it's great that Mayo does this type of thing. They tried doing an afternoon gathering at MGH last year but there were not that many people that came. I almost choked -- they had a buffet! They tell us to not eat at buffets, and then they had one? HUH?

JK, Yes, it is really great that Mayo does this. They asked who came from the farthest. Hawaii won. Volunteers served the food. I recognized one who was the first nephrologist I saw at Mayo when I was being evaluated for a transplant. Don’t understand the buffet at MGH either. Hopefully if they have it again at MGH it’ll be a better turnout.

@cmael, I also wondered about how the transplant picnic would serve food at a picnic. It looks like there were volunteers who served the food, thus eliminating contamination by individuals goint thru the line and self serving. I would be very comfortable eating at this kind of a 'buffet' where the foods are kept at safe temperatures, and served in a controlled safe way.

Yes, the food was all kept in large covered containers. There was your choice of turkey or beef to put on a bun, green beans, pasta salad, and mixed fruit. As I said volunteers served all of it, no cross contamination. The ice cream sundaes were served in another line in a different spot to be gotten later. 😋

I just received a postcard in the mail for a Gift of Life Celebration in Jacksonville Florida held by an organization called Jacksonville Transplant Alliance. It will be held on Saturday October 19th at Palms Presbyterian Church on Jacksonville Beach from 10 am-2 pm. There will be music, games, Transplant Trivia and a lunch by Carrabba’s. A professional from Mayo Clinic transplant will be the speaker. I’m not familiar with this group but wanted to pass the information along. The evening before this event there will be a donor recognition ceremony presented by LifeQuest Healrh from 7 - 9 pm.

@rosemarya. @cmael I think it makes a difference too being outside, not in a closed room where germs are contained, plus we are not in flu season. Perhaps that’s why MGH felt comfortable with a buffet too.
