Hi @karishma, welcome to Connect.
Staging takes into consideration more than just the size of the cancer. It also considers whether is has spread to the lymph nodes or other organs. This article from the American Cancer Society explains staging in detail

@w5wiggi what stage was your kidney cancer? By the way, lovely picture of you and your partner. I encourage you to upload it to your profile. Here's more info on how to update your profile: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/page/about-connect/newsfeed-post/how-to-update-your-profile/

@karishma - Kidney cancer rarely causes signs or symptoms in its early stages. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/kidney-cancer/symptoms-causes/syc-20352664 That might explain why your friend showed no symptoms of anything wrong. What led to your friend discovering that something was wrong? I wish her all the best with the nephrectomy. Please keep us posted.

I had a laparoscopic nephrectomy this year. I had 9 cm tumor and I had symptoms prior. I thought it was a kidney stone because I have a history of stones. I had night sweats the I started passing blood clots. A CT scan with contrast revealed my tumor and I also did have a kidney stone.

I am stage four and was diagnosed in May, 2013. My first chemo treatment was sunitinib and it was effective for about five years. Then, the lesions began expanding and my oncologist switched me to an immunotherapy treatment called Opdivo, which appeared to be ineffective, so he switched to cabosantinib . The side effects were severe and I elected to go into hospice. Even though this meant I was giving up on pharmaceutical treatment all together, I felt so much better, I stayed on it until my doctor called to let me know there is a new drug on the market that is a combination chemotherapy and pharmaceutical that has been shown to be effective on the cancers I am dealing with. I am awaiting the drug due to it coming through the V A.

Hi @jimchardy,

I was wondering if the new therapy you mentioned is avelumab (BAVENCIO) in combination with axitinib (inlyta)?

The name I was told for the other drug is Keytruda (Pembrolizumab). I do have metastatic lung cancer from the renalcell, stage four.
