Any TKR graduates out there with noisy knee?

Posted by ellerbracke @ellerbracke, Apr 14, 2019

I mentioned this in a post several months ago: my new knee clicks pretty audibly with every step I take. It’s a somewhat disconcerting feeling, although there is no pain, and the knee works really well. Last time I brought this up, there was one single person who also admitted to some clicking. When I checked with my favorite PT, who has been in practice locally for at least 10 years that I know of (shoulder surgery 2009!), he told me that close to half the people he deals with after TKR have some noise in their knee joint, some temporarily, many permanent. So am I really the unfortunate exception, and does one EVER get used to it? Can’t sneak up on grandsons any more when playing hide and seek!!!!

Not sure if I should be consoled (shared misery is halved misery), or hoping dearly that your clicking is temporary... if you care to update in a few weeks or months, I’d be interested how it turns out.

Knee popping 16 months after TKR
My wife had TKR on left knee in June of last year. Went to see surgeon yesterday. They did X-rays and he spent a long time comparing yesterday’s X-ray with ones just after surgery. No visual changes. He also did a thorough physical exam and had her walk back and forth in the halls so he could hear it. We have total confidence in him and he is checking with other surgeons in his practice. Hamstrings are very tight. Knee pops almost ever time the quad fires. Keeps her awake at night. She will star PT next week. Praying this brings relief.

Welcome @lrcraig. I moved your question to this discussion that @ellerbracke started when she has a similar issue:

That's pretty bad when the popping happens even when she moves in her sleep. Did your wife do PT right after surgery too? Is the popping new or has it always been there?

Popping only happens when she is up walking. She did great in PT. 128 degrees of flexion. Popping really increased about 4 months ago. I’ve had both knees replaced and I believe we all hear an occasional light pop or cracking noise occasionally. This noise you can hear from 10’ away in in quite environment.

My wife and I just saw her surgeon yesterday. Her knee was replaced in June of 2021. Our Pastor even asked her about two weeks ago as she walked by if that was her shoe making that noise. That’s when she finally gave in to my insisting she get it checked out. X-rays from yesterday, no change from last years. Surgeon has never heard of this happening a year after surgery. He did notice she has very tight hamstrings. He is consulting with his fellow knee and hip specialist. We have total confidence in him. She starts PT next week hoping this brings some improvement. Praying you get an answer too!

@lrcraig : I posted about noisy knee shortly after my TKR in 2018. Initially there was a very audible “crack” sound (and a slight popping feeling) with every step I took. It lasted at least a year, but then it gradually subsided. I still have that crack/pop when I do some hamstring exercise - bending and stretching leg while prone, at the point where I bend it to the maximum point, but other than that no more weird noises or sensations.

I am 8 weeks out of surgery and get some clicking of my knee cap. Both my surgeon and my PT predict that will diminish when swelling decreases and quad strength increases, my patella is tracking well. But, I have recently developed a pop in the back of my medial knee as I go into extension at about 40 degrees. Feels like a hamstring tendon. I always feel it when on the spin bike and on the hamstring machine. ROM is 0-130 in PT. My leg had a valgus deformity prior to surgery and is now straight. Am hoping the pop will stop with decreased swelling of the joint capsule and increased flexibility of my always tight hamstrings. Hope yours clears up soon.

Glad to hear your popping went away. Praying that after she starts the next round of PT next Wednesday that her popping and night time pain subsides.

The comments on noises coming after TKRs are interesting. The only thing I've noticed is that, when standing, I can push my patellas like buttons and they make a small clicking noise (with whatever they're hitting, probably the femoral prosthesis).

My surgeon said noises can develop early or later, can come and go, or stay. My knees feel so incredible good after TKRs, I don't care of they play music. No more bone on bone is a luxury at my age!
