azithromycin by itself for post treatment protocol

Posted by terryb1 @128128terry11t, Mar 14, 2019

After completing the Big Three protocol for MAC, has anyone been advised to take azithromycin (without any other drug) three times/weekly to reduce the possibility of a recurrence and as possible treatment for bronchiecstasis? If so, what did your doctor say about the possibility of developing resistance? Anyone know of any literature supporting this? I realize that there are mixed opinions in the medical field about doing this.

Hello. I am taking 250 mg Azithromycin daily because 3 years of treatment with the three drug regimen did not get rid of my MAC intracellular. I am also worried about developing a resistance to Azithromycin. Somehow my doctor and I haven’t gotten around to discussing this issue.

@128128terry11t & @jeanarizona, It is a good idea to be on an antibiotic post treatment for preventative measures. My doctor has me on two maintenance meds. I am on cipro 500 mg and inhaled tobramycin. (Toby added to treat pseodomonas) my dr said for me to never go on azithromycin unless as a last resort because he considers it a 'big gun', and he wants me to have it as a back-up plan should I need it down the road. You drs may have very good reasons for having you on that at the present, especially having MAI. For all I know, your suseptibility tests may show that that is all you can take. It would be worth asking your dr about it.

@heathert Hi Heather. Wasn't your strain of mac intracellular? Or MAI? Can you please share the treatment for it that helped you with @jeanarizona? Thank you!

Hi yes I have MAI I have been on the big 3 antibiotics for around 5 yrs and also did a year of inhaled amikacin last year, and finally got a clear sputum. A long time coming! I had nodules and cavities.

@heathert Has your doctor suggested going on an antibiotic post treatment to help reduce possibility of recurrence or to treat bronchiecstasis?

@128128terry11t Yes I have stayed on the antibiotics big 3(I had a big infection and 2 cavities), I have a scan next week, the last showed nodules again but they did a bronch which did not show MAC, such a complicated disease.
