Wondering if anyone familiar with SIBO diet knows if the diet is the same for sibo patients with ileocecal valve intact and for those without ileocecal valve....thanks

I have been reading about the diet and I'm more confused than ever. There are a few SIBO diets and they contradict each other. How do I know which is the best one? Has anyone else been on this diet?? So far the only part I'm looking forward to is going to my butcher to ask for a bone. *~*

The first thing you have to do is get a blood test and urine test the day before the morning appointment.. I stayed with a friend who was a long time Rochester resident.. There are several Mayo offices around town where you can get your initial test..you just have to know your Mayo Number...Mayo gives you detailed instructions for what to do the night before/ morning before.. wear easy on easy off clothing and shoes..The Instructions for where to go are detailed as well. Take a spouse, partner, friend with who will hear and be aware of things you might miss..
Almost all motels or hotels have a shuttle service to and from the Mayo clinic...you can buy parking garage tickets for a week or so.. my initial trip for gastropanesis was 3 days.. what's nice is if when talking to your GI doctor you decide to see the nutritionist...they will work you in maybe that day...
There is often music in the Gonda/Mayo Building lobby.. there is a tunnel system for all weather connection to buildings.. The Staff is very cooperative and not rushing to the next... The Staff Pay system at Mayo makes a difference...

I second that motion... Sometimes getting a referral from your local GP helps...

I just replied to @mutter3 about Mayo.. could you share your experience there, where you stayed and any recommendations to help during the visit. They said to expect a 4-7 day stay. Thanks so much for and advice you can offer.

Go to Rochester! They were amazing! I struggled for years and am finally on the right part. Everyone was so professional, kind and accommodating. Only place I’ll go from now on.

That is great to hear!
I am scheduled for March with a Motility Clinic Dr as a I also have rapid gastric emptying..doesn’t typically come with SIBO. I am SO weary from this, lost 70 lbs in 9 months, constipated and continuous nausea.
How did Mayo help and how long were you there?
I am having my second breath test from my Local GI Friday and have already done 4 rounds of Antibiotics.
I tried a Natural approach too but Oregano oil caused blood sugar drops which I already get from the rPid emptying. This all stRted last March with food or water poisoning in Mexico. Sorry this is so long I’m hopeful hearing Mayo helped you! Do you also mind me asking where you stayed and if you would recommend it? Thanks SO much!

I have had two breath test, a Lactulose and a Glucose and both were positive for Methane dominant SIBO. Then had a flex sigmoidoscopy and an enteroscopy with biopsies and aspirations. Showed I have bile backing up into my stomach. I have already been on Xifaxan 550mg twice and the second round with Flagyl. Now this Dr is prescribing Augmentin, Flagyl and Carafate. I am concerned about taking more antibiotics because they didn’t solve the problem before and doesn’t it make sense to find out why there is bile in my stomach? I haven’t had gallbladder surgery or a gastric bypass surgery and I haven’t taken proton pump inhibitors that could cause this. I am so lost. Anyone with suggestions? I thinking about getting in to The Mayo Clinic to try and find the root cause.....

Can you tell me what doctor - I am looking for a SIBO specialist for my husband who has suffered with this for 18 months... we have run our course with gastros in NYC & they are telling us to go to Mayo as they welcome a second opinion - I was looking at Mayo in Jacksonville, FL but if I have to go to Minnesota, I will go there - appreciate any help you can give me - thank you...

Mayo Minnesota is the number 1 GI Clinic in the Nation... I have been a patient there for 7 yrs.. seeing them changed my life in how I could cope with my gastroparesis ... I have seen them for other problems as well... hearing, urology, nutrition, balance... There is an airport in Rochester.. the weather is getting better now... There are hotels nearby and restaurants too .... a compact city in itself with tunnel connections in bad weather..

I agree with tiss that the doctors don't seem to really know the best diet when it comes to missing the ileocecal valve (unfortunately), but I've been working with a GI dietitian for about a year and she has been really helpful regarding diet. Even though she doesn't know the perfect diet for people like me, she does attend lots and lots of GI conferences where they go over the latest research on SIBO and other tricky gut issues. Because of that, she's super well informed so I usually trust her to at least tell me what is and isn't backed well by current scientific research. She said that right now the best evidence-based approach for treating SIBO is still the low FODMAP diet, plus antibiotics and meal spacing. That's what I've been doing lately, and it actually seems to be working pretty well so far (thanks to @tiss for the info about going back on Rifaxamin indefinitely, which I think is a big part of why it's working).

At one point, I asked her about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet since I read a lot about it and it sounded really promising to me, but she said it wasn't based on good evidence. I tried it anyways and it didn't work, so I'm guessing she was probably right. I also asked her about the medicine Atrantil since it sounded really promising too, but she said the research wasn't good on that either so I didn't get it. It can be really hard to figure out what's a fraud or not sometimes...I've definitely spent money on some things out of desperation that ended up being totally bogus.

I also asked her who is the best, most trusted person in the field right now in terms of research on all this stuff, and she said it's Dr. Mark Pimentel, out in California. It looks like his lab has been doing a lot of groundbreaking research in these areas: https://www.cedars-sinai.edu/Research/Research-Labs/Pimentel-Lab/ He also has a Twitter page, where I saw some pretty interesting success stories of people with weird/unique gut issues that he was able to help. If the Rifaxamin and low FODMAP diet stop working for me, I may try to see if I can find a way to go see him someday, though I'm not sure how seeing a doctor out of state would work. Unfortunately there don't seem to be many doctors in general who are well-versed in SIBO or missing ileocecal valves at all. I asked my GI doc here if there were any local SIBO specialists or anything he said no 🙁

Anyways, sorry, long post, but just thought I would shared what I've learned so far 🙂 !

thank you for your post. my wife has SIBO due to structural problems (surgeries, adhesions). She eats practically no sugar due to the immediate gas buildup and pain. Her only relief has come from Xifaxin, but never complete. I'm wondering if she shouldn't stay on it practically all the time. I know her GI doctor at Mayo fears the bacteria building up a resistance to it, but again, it seems to be the only thing that has helped any at all. Thoughts?
