C. difficile – Are your guts ever normal again?

Posted by sue6408 @sue6408, Jan 27, 2019

Does anyone know any body that has recovered from c.diff (guts back to pre-c.diff status ) . I have been negative for a year and still have bloating every time I eat anything and sporadic diarrhea. I need maternity clothing to eat and be comfortable. I have 0 appetite since I was initially infected.I am on creon 36,000 . this helps some what with bloating,I take papya&pineapple enzymes not helping, and floraster 2xday not sure about that.I have tried the FODMAP diet, I avoid many foods on that diet. I am seeing an RD, just finished an elimination diet with her. If I eat I bloat there for I am. Bottom line...are my guts ruined forever ?

I too am scared I am finishing Vanco again and today my stomach is crazy. I find that if I eat until I am full the next day my colon is crazy. I do not have diarrhea but formed stool but in piles. This is so upsetting. My next step dificid and if no results FMT I am not optimistic so I am preparing myself for FMT. Good luck to you I hope the med works for you and know that you are not alone in this battle ❤️

@serenityva Oh my, Diverticulitis on top of dealing with C.diff. Wishing you safe travels to Thailand. Our niece spent two weeks there this past March. Loved seeing all her beautiful photos. Will you be doing Vanco every other day on your last week of Vanco taper?

Yes, vancomycin every other day starting while I am there. I am going back to Thailand with a Thai friend, my sister, and 2 other gals...my sister and I are leaving our husbands home this trip...I am hoping no need for any medical care while I am there😘

How many years did you have 3 or r bouts a year I had 4 this year but removable was only mentioned if it had gone thru my colon which it hadn’t.

I had 3+ bouts a year for about 3 years. Each time my primary care doc wanted me to have surgery, by the time I was ready, a surgeon said wasn’t bad enough...but my Gastroentologist sent me to an excellent one who convinced me it was medically necessary, I was playing w fire...I hope you are getting the help you need, digestive issues are just so tough!

I'm suffered for 7 days with what I thought was a bad case of the stomach flu until I went to my family doctor and they requested a stool sample and found from that that I had c-diff I believe this is the sickest I've ever been in my entire life

@sandyabbey @losthope I am so encouraged to hear that you are on Dificid (fidaxamicin). That's the on RX that seems to be working for me. I've done Flagyl first, Vanco second, Vanco taper third & FINALLY Dificid with my 4th bout. I finished Dificid on 10/26 and so far...so good. This is the longest I've gone without a C.diff episode since April when I finished Clindaymycin. I'm fighting a cold now that I hope doesn't turn in to a sinus infection. I was given Clindamycin in April after my 4th sinus infection. There is no way I will take another antibiotic right now when my colon is finally functioning pretty normal. More and more physicians have stopped giving Flagyl for the first Cdiff episode. They are starting with Vancomycin and then going to Dificid earlier in the process. I realize that the cost of Dificid is prohibitive and my insurance didn't approve paying for mine until I had tried other drugs. I have a friend who was given Dificid after her second relapse and she has been free of C.diff for over two years. I, like a few of you here, will do the fecal transplant if I have another relapse. My fingers are crossed and I pray to God that Dificid worked. It's the one drug that ONLY kills the C.diff spores and leaves your good bacteria. Wishing you all a healthy 2019.

@bluebananna. How did they treat you & how are you doing now ? When I presented with my horrible diarrhea I thought I might have Cdiff because I had taken a round of antibiotics for a sinus infection. I don’t take antibiotics unless absolutely necessary. I had taken clindamycin before so I wasn’t to worried. Then I got this horrible Cdiff. I’m like you, I’ve never been so sick. Mine happened on the weekend so I waited until Monday morning to call my dr. They sent me to the ER because I needed fluids. I was started on Flagyl initially. I got better but as soon as 3 days off I was sick again. This happened 3 times & my GII changed me to vancomycin. I had 2 weeks of it. I’ve been off now for 7 days & I’m definitely better, but not ok. I have a loose stool in the morning & maybe one more later, but I always feel like I need to go. Almost everything I eat hurts my stomach except very soft things like cream potatoes, eggs etc. I’m lactose intolerant so I have to be careful with yogurts & things like that. I stay afraid all the time that it’s coming bsck. My GI dr said my next step if it does is a FMT. I’m terrified. This stuff is a nightmare. I hope you can overcome yours. Some do with just one treatment. Just stay on top of it because most have reoccurrence.

@losthope @serenityva With my first bout, I had a lot of "gel like" stools. When reading everything I could about C.diff, I also found articles with photos of exactly what my BM's were like. The "gel like" is actually puss and sloughing of the colon lining and would float in the water. I never in my like thought I would be talking to people about BM's. How things change after 4 bouts of C.diff for me. And yes, they were very narrow, almost pencil like in size.

I have the slime too. And I too am surprised that I am talking so much about my stools and slime. But I feel grateful that others have my issues
