Osteoporosis meds: How do they work?

I've been reading about osteoporosis and this is what I've seen so far: An individual builds bone until about age 30 then they begin to lose bone. Osteo meds do not help you build bone, they may actually prevent the natural bone building process but they do help you retain the bone you have but can make bone brittle. Correct?

My VitD blood levels were tested. On the low side. 3mos later rechecked after daily vit d supplementation. Vit d level now where it should be. Very hard to get enough vit d from food and the sun if you live in a snow belt.

@sue225 I know what you mean I lived in Pa all my life that is why I took Vit D3 there now with all the sun we have here in Ca. I take it on cloudy days .

Your welcome...calcium cannot absorb into the bones. But when you combine it with vitamin c, the calcium molecules bind to vitamin c, vitamin c absorbs really well by the bones. Which makes calcium absorbed well too. Hope that this helps you.

Calcium carbonate is the least expensive and to be absorbed needs to be taken with meals. The body only absorbs so much calcium at once so in the case of a calcium chew which contains 650mg, I would break it in half and take at different times. I just used this as an example. Capsules, tablets all good. Calcium carbonate is terribly constipating so if that's an issue go to calcium citrate which has the added benefit of being absorbed without having to take with food.

@contentandwell I'm now having problems with my knees . Had an injection a couple of days ago and both knees have arthritis in them The Dr. had a hard time injecting my knee . I found a product that has hylaronic acid in it along with collegeen not sure how you spell it . When in 2011 the rheumatologist injected my thumbs ,bone on bone, he did it with the H.A. so will see if this helps or not. My dieting is just G. F. staying of nightshade plants which helps.

@lioness I had many injections before finally having TKRs on both knees - at different times. I hope you get relief from the injections.

@contentandwell Thanks I hope also . I found a product that has hyaluronic acid in it that is good to take along with collagen so will give it a try also

Does anyone have info on a product called AlgeCal when taken with another supplement the company makes is suppose to both build bone and sustain the bone you have?

@contentandwell Was just at Dr had my back injected with 7 shots from upper back to sacrum . So far it feels good will see tomorrow. He is sending order over for Lidocaine patches for me.

@lioness I hope the relief lasts for a while. I presume, as with most of these injections, that they have to be redone at certain intervals. I really should get a cortisone shot in my R hip but I just don't want to bother and I feel like I am on too many prescriptions already.
