Tips on minimizing withdrawal symptoms from Effexor (aka Venlafaxine)

Posted by richyrich @richyrich, Nov 2, 2016

I have been taking Effexor/Venlafaxine for years and tried to get off it a few times but each time I try to give up the chemical withdrawal symptoms are a horror story and I give up giving up. Anyone got any tips or tried and tested strategies? Thank you

@sandij- Hi. Tinctures usually come in a bottle with a dropper. But the dosage and amount of CBD in the oil can change with different companies and different grades of the oil.
@betsyjane- There is no standard as yet for CBD oil, no set dosage. The only advice that I can give you is to first read the posts here and see what others have done. The contact someone at the company you chose to answer questions.
I use CBD oil but I am going up in dosage and there is also a small amt of THC in it which will also increase.

When I first started my local dispensary suggested 10 mg CBD oil to start with. Take it once or twice a day at the same times and give it several weeks to work. You can google about how to use the drops.
Do you personally know anyone who takes it who you could ask how they make their decisions?

The only person I know who uses CBD oil uses it for something else, and he takes one drop under the tongue each night. It tends to make him drowsy. So I started with one drop. I find it difficult to "see" how much I'm getting. I have only used it on the eve of the night/next morning when my dosage is such that I would have a tendency for the brain zap, which in my case is every 4th day. Today is that day and the oil last night did NOT help one whit. I tried to use more, but not sure whether it was 2 or 3 drops. Think it was more than one. I am off today (Friday) and thought I'd try another dose. My bottle says take a full dropper twice a day, but it doesn't mention what you're taking it for! Not sure what 10 mg would be. Bottle and other droppers are measure in milliliters.

Looking back through some of these posts, folks who experienced brain zaps found relief by cutting back on caffeine and sugar, taking Ben*dryl and reducing stress. One person mentioned Disipal, an anticholinergic that prevents the activity of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Others believe omega-3s will help the brain heal. While it is unclear how omega-3s help brain zaps, many people have documented significant reductions in the frequency and number of zaps they experience during withdrawal when they supplement with omega-3s.

I appreciate the additional suggestions. Frankly, trying to wade through all the posts is difficult time-wise. I recently cut back on caffeine (I love coke!) but noticed no difference. Unfortunately I have an ongoing problem with mouth "sores" and lip swelling, and decrease in taste buds, and sugar is one of the things that tastes like it should. Plus, due to digestive issues, I've lost a lot of weight and don't have to "worry" too much about sugar intake at the moment. But I can certainly temper that. I have taken Omega-3s for a long time. Anyway, still determined. I'm getting off the stuff, even if it takes a while.

I ignored the avoid-caffeine-and-sugar advice. My drink of choice is real Coke, love chocolate and am not a fan of artificial sweeteners. I, too, was already taking omega-3 and just upped my daily supplementation.

Same. Mr Pibb or cherry coke here. Also, chocolate contains magnesium 😉

I am not using CBD oil, but for those wanting to learn about it, or trying to figure out how much CBD oil to use--
CBD oil products are treated as food supplements by the FDA and are required to have a nutritional label which requires a “suggested serving size.” Manufacturers put a “suggested serving size” on the label, but finding the right dose depends on weight, height, age, your body chemistry, issue you're taking the oil to treat and intensity of your symptoms.

Note:
Tincture bottles come in various sizes and have differently sized droppers (i.e., tubes, usually glass) attached to the droppertop.
The squeeze bulb will draw the same amount of liquid into the tube each time so that you get the suggested dose.
The dropper is designed to have space between the level of the liquid inside it and the squeeze bulb--a dropperful does NOT mean full all the way to the top.
Unless specified, the big number on the front of your CBD oil bottle (250, 500, 750, 1000mg, or more) indicates the amount of CBD in the entire bottle.

Use this formula to determine how much CBD is in your dropper--
[Total CBD in bottle] ÷ [Number of milliliters in bottle] = mgs of CBD in a dropper

Equivalencies--
1 drop = .05 milliliter (mL)
20 drops = 1 dropperful = 1 mL = 7mg
# of droppersful from a 1 oz bottle—30
# of droppersful from a 2 oz bottle—40
1 oz bottle = 30 ml, or 6 tsps, or 30 droppersful, or 900 drops
5 ml = 1 tsp

Because I get my CBD products from a great place with a large online community, I never hesitate to ask the other users what they consume of various products. I also keep it simple. I pull up a dropperful and put it under my tongue, leaving it there for at least 30 seconds. I have several different varieties from the same company, and the best resource is other customers.

@sandij- This is wonderful to hear Sandi. Can you give us the name of the company?

I have CBD but it o my helped with anxiety. Trying not to be on anything just to get a baseline of things. And in doing all this I keep think I’m over thinking everything! Sorry... still spiraling. This will get better if I stick it out, right? The apathy? Life is just a s—- storm right now, right? Mourning my dad, and my mom since she has Alzheimer’s, moving needing to change jobs? This is all a product of these stressors, yes? Regular depression that I can get through?

@secretwhitepop- Yes you will get through this. Please take a step back and give yourself a break. are mourning both of your parents. How bad can this get for you - not much so don't judge yourself honey. You are in a very vulnerable position right now so over thinking things is not in your best interest. I'm laughing at myself because I'm queen of overthinking myself. I just drive myself into a tizzy!
I also take CBD oil for anxiety. If you feel apathetic it might be too much oil or maybe too much of another medicine or both. It might also be your natural defense so that you won't feel so awful, so filled with pain. How long ago did your dad die? How is your mom handling this? Can you and your mom talk about your dad?
