Mucusy blood on stool

I was dxd 2 years ago with mild diverticulitis. I have lately been not eating properly. 7 grain bread, cashew nuts, salads, raw fruit, and Motrin each night for arthritis. I became constipated, then had diarrhea and saw blood on the stools (not in them). I go faithfully for colonoscopies every 5 years and am due in 2 years. All has been clean. I am hoping this is a flare up of the diverticulitis. Wondering if anyone has had this and advice. I am 63 years old and am giving this a week or 2 to clear up with eating light and right. Thank you. Welcome to Mayo Connect, @ann64. I saw your post, and I thought to reply. I can imagine how frightened you must be right now. Unfortunately, I am not qualified, or even able to comment on your symptoms. If I were you, I would give a call to my doctor, and seek his opinion about waiting 2 weeks or checking it out now. I know that our tendency is to want to wait it out, but I have learned that its better to get solutions as soon as possible to prevent anything that might be serious. And if it is nothing, you are free of 2 weeks of worrying.

I also am not a doctor and can only tell you of my experience. I have had colonoscopies many times. Each time I was told that a pollop or two was removed. The last time was a little over a year ago. I never experienced any discomfort before or after and never had problems with my colon except that I always got diarrhea if I ate cashews and have been like that all my life even when I was a child. I am now 66 but the last colonoscopy caused me to hemmorage and I was admitted back to the hospital for overnite observation. Well, everything started happening immediately after that. I didn't feel well even though I remained on a soft diet. Finally, my thyroid readings went bizurk and I am now having severe headaches and can barely turn my neck. I have dizziness and am extremely tired. I had to give up my job because of lack of memory as well. My hearing has been affected. Don't let doctors or anyone tell you that all your symptoms are connected to old age. I'm not going to settle for that and I eventually will find out what the problem is. So, take care and I hope all turns out better for you. My next colonoscopy will be when I say I need it.

@ann64 Let me join you in the ranks of those who suffer from diverticulitis. I usually have one flare-up of diverticulitis each year. As a matter of fact, I just finished a prescription of Cipro. I would encourage you to see your doctor when you have these flare-ups. An antibiotic is usually needed to bring the flare-up to a halt. A colonoscopy is not always needed to treat diverticulitis. If diverticulitis is not treated, however, it can result in some serious health problems down the road, so I encourage you to see a doctor and take care of yourself.

Nothing has helped me I am still being researched

Thank you Teresa. I have an appointment next month with my doctor. Bleeding has stopped, stools now formed and I seem to be getting back to normal. I will definitely discuss with my doctor. Nancy

Hello, and thank you for responding. Unfortunately, I have nothing to share yet because this was my first bout with it. Doing much better now, I have to say. I see no more blood on stools and they are once again formed. Will be discussing with my doctor next month.

Rosemary, my symptoms are much better today. I had a colonoscopy 3 years ago, and that was clean as was all the others I had. I will be seeing my doctor next month and plan on discussing this with her at that time. I see no more blood, and will be doing a hemocult test tomorrow to check the stools. No mucusy blood on the outside either and they are now formed. Feeling better about it and may just move my colonoscopy up a bit to be sure though. Thank you so much for replying.
