What Distracts You From the Pain?

Hello!
We share what works (and what doesn't) for us as far as medicines and surgeries, etc.
What works for you to give yourself a little break? I'm presently researching family history from the comfort of my recliner.

Yes, I understand you. I just saw a pain dr, my GP, a phychologist and my gastrologist for my terrible pain, which originates from bone spurs and arthritis
in my neck. The surgeons do not want to touch it, so they all tell me, live with it and take opioids. They help, but they have so many negative sides.
Make me tired all day, no appetit, no interest in friends and family any more and there is no one to help me to get off them. Wean yourself off slowly or sign yourself into a clinic for 39,000.00 for four weeks.
I have been living with my pain in the head now for years. Now I have digestion pain, caused by constipation. Been to the ER several times, when I got scarred, because it also effected my heart.
So I can feel for you very much!
But my husband and I will not give up. This is no way to live, if there must be a way to treat this pain!

Thanks for the welcome. I have a great husband, wonderful animals that calm me. Ice cream, most specifically Blue Bunny Mini ice cream cones (with caramel). I try to take my mind of of it with coloring. I started this before it became a fad.

I have chronic pain also. I have been to five neurosurgeons tell me I need a rod, plate, screws and a fusion. I have declined as one told me I wouldn't be able to bend over to feed dogs, etc. I live in pain. I am so afraid the screws would only make my osteoporosis worse, fall out, etc. I also have fibromyalgia/ Need surgery on nose to be able to breathe. I have depression. The list goes on. People only laugh when I say I need surgery from my nose to my toes. Oh, I forgot to tell you my toes have decided to curve like a question mark, making me walk on my ingrown toe nails. Since I can hardly breathe, oh, yes, I have sleep apnea. Also, had one saliva gland removed and have Sjogrens Syndrome, dry mouth, full of cotton and it ain't cotton candy!

Same thing at my home. I'm a complainer who never feels good according to my mate.
Last year he had a operation
It was shall we say in a very delicate area of his body. Oh my.. goodness......he said he was in so much pain, he practically needed someone to blow his nose for him.
He was supposed to get up and walk around the house at least every 1.5- 2 hours.
He expected me to wait on him hand to foot. I couldn't nor shouldn't do it. The doctor wanted him up and about. It prevents blood clots. He asked me for this and that. I said you need to get up and move around. I never ask him for even a glass of water. My dear Mother had a saying, "Those who can't "see" have to "feel". Oh he felt alright. Now, he "sees" my pain a little more.

1st time. Am 75, live alone, and do not really have a sounding board nor "advisor" re chronic buttock, SI joint issues. Also chronic knee issues..but no flare ups right now. So not constant like my "sitting" and "lying on back" buttock/tailbone issues.
Have 3 sons. Men re medical issues..yes, can relate.

I watch tv, if anything interesting is on, go on my laptop to read about stuff or listen to music. Talking to people helps if it is something stimulating to me which is hard to find others who are interested in the same things as I am. But when I have sciatic shooting pains nothing works. I just roll around on my bed and rub the area if I can reach it or do somethings that physical therapists have shown me although this does not work for long. After years of having these pains a retiring neurologists said to try muscle relaxants and they do help. Also sleeping if I can get to sleep, but that is really hard when I have shooting pain. I may try some of the things that people have listed here to see if it works. 19lin

@19lin for your sciatica have you tried a chiropractor? or accupunctur? My son suggested this to me for my back problems I'm going to look for one but my chiropractor releases the sciatica nerve for me.

Eating. It has worked ever since I was an infant, crying, and someone would shove a bottle in my mouth. Later I learned to do this with food when I was in pain and we were too poor to afford to see a doctor. Now, I do it as much from habit as from frustration that doctors won't prescribe effective pain medication for fear of the DEA. Friday, I was refused Ultram.
