Tramadol and multiple pain issues

Posted by JohnWBurns @johnwburns, Sep 3, 2016

I've tried tramadol a number of times without success for headache, back and neuropathic pain, but always at low and apparently less than effective doses such as 50 mg twice a day. I tried it today at a single 100 mg dose and got significant headache relief and even a little kicker in mood. My neurologist encouraged me to try it PRN and he may be onto something. I'm pretty placebo resistant so I wonder if anyone else has had success with pain issues, and possibly mood as well, with doses up to 300 - 400 mg of tramadol.

Also interested in side effects since its not supposed to depress respiration, at least as badly as opiates. It may however interfere with sleep, specifically stage 3 slow wave.

Any thoughts or insights appreciated.

Thanks

@johnwburns sounds like a good time to ask you doctor about PGx testing... Here's some information on it.

You may not metabolize the drug. Or at a very slow rate. This testing will tell you which drugs are best for you or which ones to avoid. It will also tell you the best dose to take.

Pretty awesome!!!

Very perceptive. I assume that I have issues with CYP2D6 after a recent go round with plaquenil and metoprolol. Unfortunately, I'm on medicare and there is no way they'll cover it, the swine.

Medicare covers 100% as long as you are on 1 or more medication treating 1 or more coverable diagnosis. Over 150 covered different diagnosis. Definitely worth discussing with your md & insurance.

Ok, many thanks, I'll have a look. I'm deep in the weeds with diagnoses so that won't be hard. What is hard is getting the doctor's back offices to do anything without explaining it 6 times. Need to pick them off one at a time.

Good luck!! If I may suggest, share the link with them. The testing will become standard practice. It is one more tool to help doctors treat patients more effectively.

I'm guessing its time you told them when its time to get it out. Too many downstream consequences for letting the little monster hang around. Take luck out of the equation. Pulling for you.

Hi,I tried tramadol 100mg for surgical pain, back pain and arm pain and it did not work for me. I am glad you got some relief. I would be afraid to increase the dose any higher.
