Falling for no apparent reason: Any ideas?

Posted by callalily74 @callalily74, Aug 11, 2016

I'm 75, active, female, and constantly falling for seemingly no reason. I just fall! Three times already this week. In one fall, I split my ear and required 8 stitches. No dizziness, etc.

I need falling prevention classes in Seacoast NH. I am getting very worried that one of these falls will result in serious injury. Perhaps I need some kind of testing. Tomorrow, I'm going to an ENT doctor who was referred to me by a doctor at the Urgent Care Clinic who said my ear was infected. The ENT receptionist said maybe he'll refer me to an audiologist or optometrist to do balance, inner ear testing, etc. Does that sound about right to anybody who knows what I'm talking about. Remember, no lightheadedness or dizziness, etc. I take several medications for depression, anxiety, cholesterol, etc, but my mind does not feel foggy or cloudy.

Please help me find an appropriate doctor specializing in this issue. Or a suitable class or program. I am getting scared now. It happens too much. I only was really hurt once so far when I split my ear when I fell, but I know it can happen any time now and maybe disable me, or worse.

Please help me. I'll be here to see any posts all day today and am free to answer any questions you may have.

It's not your falt it is your husbands. Many physical and psychological problems can occur which can make a person depressed. And many people think about suicide and do not act. If you are concerned about your suicidal ideations than it would not be a bad thing to see a therapist. It couldn't hurt. But do not let your husband bully you. If the ideations get too bad than do go to the emergency room and speak with a psychiatrist. It is better you do it when you have all your faculties than being committed by either your husband or the hospital. The key is stay in control of your self as much as possible. You sound like a very intuitive person so follow your instincts

It sounds to me like you have plenty of reasons to despair-I've had a problem with falls gradually worsening from my late 30's to my 50's and finally accepted that I'm safer with a cane. Words like "cripple"and images of tottering elders made it even more difficult. I got a diagnosis of "cerebellar ataxia" which seems to mean I fall a lot, the problem's in my brain, and the MRI's ruled out anything they can treat. The workup did help me think of it as a valid neurological disorder more than a personal failing.
I also have a mood disorder and fibromyalgia; between them I get enough pills to make me rattle. Cutting back on any meds that are not doing anything reduced the fall risk but apparently there's something going on over and above the meds.
You may certainly have depression secondary to the balance issue, but the depression still can be treated, husband notwithstanding. You are the one living in your own skin. Take care.

Sue, one other question: Have you had a lab test of your Parathyroid Hormones (PTH) lately? PTH is pivotal in regulating transfer of calcium from bones into the blood.
Have you had a MRI? Sounds like a partial seizure to me. I have them and they last a moment or two and I seldom lose consciousness. If I am standing or walking, though, I do fall.

No MRI. ENT doctor said it's not an inner ear problem and I should just get PT. What does the little seizure feel like ? I don't feel anything. I think the doctor just thought it was part of my aging process.

My cousin has been following three or four times a week. She has weakness in her left leg which we assumed it was brought on from a previous sciatic nerve surgery and the surgeon nicked his sciatic nerve. She refused any further surgery regarding this. That was six years ago she has Declined since that time by falling frequently. The doctors have center to PT which job for a little bit and now she’s back to following three or four times a day I made up a week. What test should be performed to see what damage has been done to that leg? She does say that before she falls her legs start shaking and so she knows she’s going to fall but can’t avoid it. She has a walker she has a scooter all those things but like today all she was doing was reaching down to pick something up and fell Doctors don’t seem to be interested in running any further test for some reason and see what is going on or if there’s nerve damage and that lady or neuropathy is something that’s causing your falls

@cleopatra2548 l have also been falling since 1997 but the doctors really can't figure out why. I fell and torn my ACLU and knocked over mannequin, talking pictures with my family, getting our of bed to go to the bathroom and one time l fell and had to get three root canals. I been to rehab inpatient and outpatient. I fell in stores and just last week l fell at the doctors office. They were really terrified and l had to go to the hospital. I was admitted for 4days and they thought l was depressed because my mother just passed. I told them l am not depressed she was 94 and she couldn't walk, had to have help to be fed and having Alzheimer's is not the way she wanted to live and she was tired. And when you know she is in heaven and has no more pain. I am happy she doesn't have to suffer anymore that doesn't say l won't miss her but l know she is happy now. So the doctor thought l was definitely crazy. But my falling is due to my HE so l just have to pray and keep hydrated and watch my ammonia levels. I suggest you should try and gather z lifeline for hat will help if you are alone. I have one and l wea ft it when l am home alone or go OP it by myself. And l wear it or put it my purse when l go to church because l even fell there too. It's hard because you never know when it will happen. I never knew l would have so many orthopedic doctor friends. I tell them l need to get stock in there hospital
They laugh but l am serious. See if you can get a service dog also. It might help you they are expensive but some places say if you have a fundraiser for them it will go towards the cost of the dogs. I have a dog but she hasn't been trained to be a service dog but since l.kept falling in the house she follows me everywhere as nd they are definitely good company. And its neuropathy try some compression stocking. Make sure everything is clear of any items when you walk. And if you have carpet in your house make sure its stuck down firmly. I have hardwood but l will be putting carpet in my bedrooms. And l have tile in my kitchen in bathrooms so l have to see what you can get for those rooms. And also you might need a helmet to protect your head. God bless you!!!

Callililly, This year within one month I fell twice. I fell on my back and crushed my Vertibra. It was necessary to place concrete in the area of the crushed Vertibrae. Second fall a week later on my face. I looked like I had been beaten up. I passed out the second time. I spent 3 weeks off and on in the hospital. Falling is no joke and if you are aware of the fall because you pass out then the fall is even worse. I do have inner ear issues. I was diagnosed with Minears in about 2006 Dr. simply do not know how to treat this disease. I came within minutes of a surgery at Scripps Hospital in San Diego to place some awful thing in my head near the ear. I heard the dr say "near the brain" and I said NOPE I am out of here. He was not to happy. The "thing" he was going to put in my ear was still experimental. I was so bad I almost did it. As time went on I was less affected by the Minears. But falling is serious. They think when I passed out the second time that I might have had a seizure. Who knows, no one was with me. Please take care - get up from a chair or couch, very slowly and stand for a few seconds before walking. See your heart doctor...........

Tecky, you are so funny. I agree the falling is not a joke but the circumstances that led to the fall can be serious. I have the stockings and must remember to put them on each day. I don't have the lifeline thingee. Must get one I had shots in my neck and back in the last two weeks. This next Monday I go back for shots in my neck again. If the shots do not work, I will not do surgery. It is out of the questions. Everytime I say that I end up in Surgery. But, for my back, I mean it. I would rather hurt than never walk again. Check out your heart...as soon as you can.

@oregongirl l can relate to what you are saying. I fell so many times. I can be conscious or sometimes unconscious and right away they say l am wanting attention. I fell at church, at home depot in the mall but the most embarrassing fall was just last week at the doctors office. I know it's when my ammonia levels are high but since it already in my chart that have bipolar and schizophrenia then that's what they stick too. Even though l went to the mayo clinic and they ruled that out it already in my records. I asked the doctor at the mayo clinic if it can be taken off he said only if the doctor wants to take it off. One time when l went into the hospital because of falling they were getting ready to do a MRI and they give a medication l was having a reaction and they again thought l was faking it but a nurse told me , you know why you keep having a reaction because the meds they are giving you you are allergic too. Now nurses are really not suppose to tell you that but l was telling her l thank you so much. So everytime anyone gives me meds l always ask what it is and ask am l allergic to it. But l know sometimes l have seizures but they say l som not. So l have to educate them about the symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy and autoimmune encephalitis. I had back surgery and l really didn't want to have it because it was always said if you have it once it doesn't help or you will have to have it again. So far so good but since all the falls recently l am back in rehab. But even though l may have some issues l am still blessed. And to get my memory back after 20yrs that's a miracle. But don't let anyone tell you that you are faking it. That's an insult, nobody just want to fall it's not fun at all. Take care of yourself!!!
