Hello @westwind and welcome to Mayo Connect. I have several areas of cysts as well. If you feel comfortable sharing would you mind explaining where your cysts are and how your doctor discovered them? For me, the most bothersome location is in the pancreas. I've had several evaluations of these and they look quite harmless at the time. I'm sure you will find support and encouragement as you share with Mayo Connect. We would like to get to know you!

Hello:
I would like to discuss this. I was diagnosed in 2011 routine ultrasound. I did not find out the extent of the cysts until 2015. I now insist on having a copy of all ultrasound reports. I had ovaries removed in 2015, and it was diagnosed as one ovary having a large cyst but decided to remove both to avoid any others

I now have Kidney, pancreas, will be seeing specialist to get the kidney one removed?

How common and are there any information on why this occurs. What might the outcome be? Where is there further medical info on this?

Thanks.

@westwind Thanks for providing more information. While I'm not a medical expert, my impression is that cysts are not all that serious, however, some need to be followed more closely. With regards to my pancreatic cysts, the number and the size have been growing over the years. I had an MRI for further evaluation last year and it all looked relatively harmless with a message from my doc to follow up in another year for a repeat MRI. However, since I've had a history of neuroendocrine tumors (NET) in the duodenum, I was hesitant to wait a year. I "googled" the term pancreatic cysts and came up with John Hopkins website (I'm sure that Mayo also has info) and it highly recommended doing a gastro endoscopic ultrasound to get a close-up look at the cysts. Given my medical history I decided to do that. The impression of the gastro endoscopic ultrasound were the same as the MRI, no serious problem was evident, however, the procedure did reveal a new NET in the duodenum (this was my third). As these NETs are best if found early I'm grateful that it was found and that I could then get it removed surgically. I also have another cyst in the thyroid. My suggestion is to avail yourself of as much knowledge about pancreatic cysts and if possible consult with another specialist for a second opinion. In this way you can relax a little as you become better informed. Please keep in touch, I'd like to know how you are doing! Teresa

I too have 2 liver cysts and a 3-centimeter one on the surface of one kidney near my adrenal gland. They too were discovered over the last six years on routine ultrasound exams of my kidney. They have been looked at by MRI (twice) and ultrasound (twice). The radiologist reported each time that there was no evidence that the cysts were cancerous or functional as pseudo-glandular growths. My medical team repeatedly concluded that, so long as the cysts don't grow -- and they cause no perceptible symptoms -- we should not biopsy them, which would be a mandatory step before considering surgery to remove them. So I agree with @hopeful33250 that the cysts are "not all that serious."

At this stage, I just keep the cysts on the front burner of the questions to raise with my primary physician, urologist, and nephrologist on a regular basis.

I have polycystic kidney disease which led to kidney failure; however, polycystic liver disease has not affected the liver function. At present, just seems to be uncomfortable due to the enlargement of the liver. I would recommend going to Mayo if you have any unanswered questions as they will work to find answers. Mayo is simply the best at helping you understand what is going on with your health and working out a course of action.

I add my welcome @westwind. Thank you for starting this discussion. Who knew that so many members had personal experience about organ cysts to share. Please see this discussion about pancreatic cysts as well, which includes links to resources from Johns Hopkins and Mayo Clinic for your reference https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/pancreatic-cyst/ I'd also like to loop @bonitav into this conversation.

I have a bunch of cysts in my lungs, and two doctors told me they are harmless. So since I have so many other medical problems, I've decided not to worry about them.

I have been thinking about this and wondering why? I have never really had acne...or anything like that...But everytime they do any kind of ultrasound or mri xrays...they keep finding cysts through out my body...I always got cysts on my ovaries when younger...then they found one in a breast...then they found them on both adrenal glands...a big one in my uterus...another in the other breast...one in my hip joint...now some in my spinal column...and one on my kidney...my thyroid is riddled with them....what the heck is causing all of these??

I have cysts on both kidneys. Thus far doctors say they are harmless. Monitoring.
