Severe leg cramps: How do you relax severe leg cramps?

Posted by Dawn, Alumni Mentor @dawn_giacabazi, Jun 25, 2016

Please someone tell me the trick to relax severe leg cramps????
Lord, they are lasting 1-2 hours, debilitating pain. Can't walk them off. Starting behind the knees down to my toes. Some curl my toes some point them. Tried stretching, bio feedback relaxation. NO HELP!! HELP!

Update:
Cramps continue.
I had a fall Monday from my blood pressure dropping to 82/50 & severe leg cramp. Xrays today confirmed fracture of the ischium. Not so fun!

Met with the endocrinologist. 99% sure it is pheochromocytoma in the adrenal gland. Few tests to rule out that 1%. The 1% makes a huge difference as it will determine if they remove entire adrenal gland or just the tumor. 🙁

@coastalgirl, I'm interested in kidney disease as a cause of your cramps. I have both, but haven't discussed cramps with my nephrologist. How do you think I could raise that issue with her most effectively? There are so many facets of kidney disease that finding how it produces cramps is like looking for planets among the stars! Can you help me zero in on this?

I would tell your dr. about the severe cramps and from your blood draws they can check electrolyte levels and creatinine which indicates level of kidney function.
Has your dr. ever indicated that you have diminished kidney function?
Best wishes with finding a solution.

I have had muscle cramps for years and thought it was due to my Multiple Sclerosis, but come to find out after years of this kind of pain, that I actually had a blood anemia called ITP, Immune Thrombocytopenia. I now get plazma or Iron infusions and then the cramps will subside. You may want to discuss this with your Doctor too. Hope this helps!

Thank you, @emiliaolga!
I see my endocrinologist Mon to make a plan. Apparently they have something to do with my tumor in the adrenal gland which robs the body of potassium, magnesium, and sodium. I look forward to reading those books. 🙂
Thank you

I'm with you. I've tried everything anyone has suggested. Just last night I had them in BOTH legs at the same time. So bad that I can't straighten up and am barely able to walk. Mine are mainly in my upper inner thighs. Like someone is ripping out the muscles. Not Charlie Horses.

No I've no back issue. But do have knee issues. Been thinking this may be the cause. Bone Dr. does not think so. I've had X-Rays of knees. Had Ultrasound to rule out vascular issues. When I do have these cramps they are so severe I'm afraid of passing out.

It’s almost 2 years since my original post am sadly I am still having daily muscle cramps. My physical therapist taught me how to get rid of them when they start but we still have no treatment to prevent them. They get so bad they now pull my pelvis out of place a couple days a week. Many tears have been shed. They finally removed 1 Adrenal glad recently so we are in hopes my cramps will resolve soon or subside.

I hope you find answers soon!!
