After knee replacement surgery

Posted by beatricefay @beatricefay, Jun 16, 2016

Had left knee replaced 9 days ago. Right knee two years ago. Having a problem with inflammation so hard to bend knee and exercise. Trying to ice and raise knee above heart. Doctor suggested getting compression hose. Anybody have this experience and can offer suggestions. So tired all the time from pain interrupting my sleep and painkillers. My insurance refused to pay for the painkiller recommended by surgeon so have to take one with more opiates. That's frustrating. Two years ago it was covered but now too expensive for me to use. Seems the drug companies, not our doctors are determining what we use.

Hi gailfaith -- Thank you for pointing out to me how blessed I am with my knee replacement! I have some very minor concerns, and to put it in perspective, my concern about the scar is minor, too. My knee is coming along as expected for 8 weeks post-op, and in general, I'm doing very well. My range of motion is 107, and I'm working hard to increase that number. Thanks very much for your reply!

Hi @mari,
You do have a big decision, but thought I'd mention my experience. I've had two successful TKR that have given me back my life. I didn't know much about stem cell treatments when I had them done, and still don't know how long these treatments last compared to TKR. Does anyone know? I do know that if you decide on a TKR it's important to get a doctor that does at least 50 a year. Good luck with whatever you decide. I'd like to know how it goes.

Hi contentandwell......gailfaith here. I am surprised the massive motion machine didn't help you. I had it for both knees and I dread the day I would have to have another TKR and try to recover without it.! Did you get the machine to use at home? Maybe there is hope I'd get to use one. I just had my knees x-rays by the surgeon (knees done 2004 (L) and 2006 (R)), and even though I have now walked over 100 measured miles, they show no wear yet !!!!!!!!!!

@gailfaith The machine I used was one in my home. You were supposed to lay down with this thing and be that way for a couple of hours.
You say you had it for both knees and then that you hope you could get one. Do you need to have a revision to one of the replacements?

Also, just want to mention, if you put the @ in front of the person's online name the email notification tells that person that you have a message. This can be helpful on days when you have a lot of mail and not much time because you can pick out those that are directed to you.

@contentandwell Thanks for mentioning the @ sign when addressing a member. It makes sure that the person gets a notification that they have a messager. Teresa

@contentandwelll @ hopeful33250 Yes, when using the passive motion machine, it is not like 10 minutes or whatever a day. It does take time (hours) but you can use it while you are asleep at nite. When I had it in the nursing home, I had it going whenever I was in bed. I work up from the surgery with my leg already on it! gailfaith

@hopeful33250 Teresa, it does and sometimes if your time is limited it is particularly nice to see if there are any messages directed to you. The email alerting me to messages is very full of course with the MAI messages so often i have to delete them but since I have responded to a few things in there I always hope I am not deleting messages to me.

@contentandwell Yes, I know what you mean - I wish there were a special way to distinguish a message that is a reply to me rather than just all the messages of interest. Hmmm - might be a good suggestion for the tech folks at Mayo Connect. Teresa

@hopeful33250 Teresaa, I have also participated on the message boards on the American Liver Foundation site and when you respond to a particular message it shows who the response is to, and you click on that it will show you the original message being responded to. I prefer the Mayo site for good info though.
