I have had a scab in my left nostril for years.

I have had a scab in my left nostril for years. When the scab comes out there is bright red blood that I dab a few times and it stops. I had seen online someplace cases of numbers of people all with the same affliction. They said that the scab was some form of an infection and they had received many suggestions from doctors about just leaving the scab alone so it won't bleed or giving them medications that do not work or cause the person unpleasant side effects. Mind you, this is not BSC but some thing that fastened onto the cartilage of the nose and is a hard thing to eradicate. I tried Essential oils and used Tea Tree Oil and also Cleavers which I put on a cotton ball and put it in on my nose cartilage for an hour. Cleavers does not have a pleasant smell refreshing as do my other oils and it is a dark color but it is supposed to do the trick. Cleavers did help and the scab in smaller and does not clog the nose as some people complained of. I know it is something requiring an antibiotic to cure. It is some form of herpes simplex I feel. I know "bugs" of that sort love the lining of the nose and that there are many blood vessels ready to bleed if disturbed by this whatever it is called. I would love anyone's input who has encountered the same thing.
Thank you people.

I am a healthy ninety except for ankylosing spondylitis and wet macular

I was put on Antibiotics and a nasal cream. After about 2 weeks I went into the ENT for another checkup. I got the all clear that my nose has healed up well. I'm still healing from the small area where the cauterization happened. And there is visible scarring from where I've been having this issue for so many years. It may well have been the antibiotics that finally cleared up the blood spotting and scabbing. I still have some light buildup on my nose, but not like it was before. Overall my nose is much more comfortable. I've been using my humidifier every single night set to 55% humidity. My nose hasn't flt this good and I haven't breathed this well in a long time. My mucus generally doesn't have blood spots like I've been accustomed to over the years.

Time will tell if this was purely a bacteria infection. Or a combination of bacteria and dry air. Either way, I feel like I have a better handle on keeping a healthy nose.

I have it in both of my nostril and they do block my nose, I have to try and open up so I can breath. Then my nose starts to bleed and it is really hard to stop and by the time it stops they are blocked back up right away it is a nightmare and it is 24-24. Doctors don't have a clue. The funny thing is my nose is always dripping not just blood but nasel fluid also sorry for the spelling. If anyone finds out anything please let me know. Thanks

I was diagnosed with Wegners and had the same symptoms. See your ENT doctor.

Hi, @julsbridget - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sounds like you, too, had some very challenging to deal with symptoms. How long did it take for you to get diagnosed with Wegener's granulomatosis (which I understand is also now known as granulomatosis with polyangiitis)? Do you know what symptoms or test results tipped your doctor off that you might have this condition?

I have had crusting in my nose since I had rhinoplasty about 17 years ago! This includes a chronic scab in my left nostril. I have had swabs and they show infections. So I use antibiotics applied topically, which gives relief for a while but it comes back. I wonder whether the infections because I cannot help myself touching it. I have heard that using things like Vaseline can get into the lungs and cause problems.

Hi, @mayoeggbutty2020 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I'm with you ... having a chronic scab would be a real challenge for me to leave it alone and not touch it. I think that despite our mother's warnings not to mess with our scabs, it's kind of human nature.

If the antibiotics you have taken for infection around the area of the scab in your left nostril are not providing longer-term relief, what does your ENT surgeon or primary care physician suggest you do next?

Thanks for sharing what worked for you, @achillies. Do you know or remember how you got the scab in the first place?

I too have been plagued by the nose sore, just in one nostril. I ended up with a MRSA infection after endometrial cancer surgery and since, the sore lives on. I get some relief by alternating Carmex and an antibiotic OTC ointment, it seems if I can keep it somewhat moisturized, it feels a little better. I understand what others say about the bleed---if it does, it is fast & profuse, literally running out of my nose like a faucet. If I do remove the scab, it must directly correlate to my sinuses because my teeth hurt immediately. I also have rheumatoid arthritis (JRA since I was 6), so-- maybe someone can make the correlation between autoimmune diseases and this annoyance!

I have RA also. I always have problems with stuffy dry nose. My scab is right at the entrance of the tip of my nose. I have felt some relief with coconut oil applied with a cotton swab. I have heard coconut oil has healing properties in it. My nose is a everyday problem I have had for years. I live next to a freeway that is used to export goods from the port that I live next to. That does not include the ships and refineries that polite the air that I breath. Another pro lem that irratates my nose is the blowers that the city Gardner's use.

sores inside nose along with sore throat and headache

PLEASE HELP...Hi, about a month ago I noticed a sore inside my one nostril and I thought it was a possible cold sore which I have NEVER had in my life. I let it go and thought it would just go away on own but felt so bad as if it was going to go through my whole nostril! I ended up using rubbing alcohol on both inside n out and that seemed to help scab it. It eventually shrunk in size n pain subsided major but i kept feeling a small discomfort like a small scratch. I've been also getting random headaches with sharp pain right down middle of forehead and sometimes in temples as well but thought it may be bc i've been under some stress. The past week i've had a sore throat and hoped its just a cold i'm getting. Well today I noticed my nose was really sore again n thought that thing was coming back but it was at almost tip of my nose so I pulled tip of nose up to look inside and as i did, i noticed i had a small off white filled sack inside at tip inside, another larger open sore on same side but against face that i never felt. Then as i kept pulling up to look i popped the small sack and also noticed another small sore bleeding on other side as well! I don't feel sick but have a sore throat. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I began to google it but it led me here..thank you
