COVID Activity Rehabilitation Program (CARP) at Mayo Clinic

People who have been infected with COVID-19 often experience symptoms long after their infection has resolved. Mayo Clinic has developed programs which may help improve some of these continued symptoms.

Patients with post COVID-19 syndrome can make themselves worse if they push themselves too hard. It is often hard for patients to understand how to limit their activity while healing from the COVID-19 infection. Our physical and occupational therapy team helps patients pace themselves appropriately.

Greetings.  My name is Dr. Greg Vanichkachorn and I serve as the medical director for the COVID activity rehabilitation program at Mayo Clinic.  Since the spring of 2020, our program has helped people who continue to have symptoms after a COVID-19 infection.

The first few weeks after a COVID-19 infection can be a very difficult and scary time. Our program is designed to help you during this early period.

First, we focus on making sure there are no other medical conditions, like another infection, that could be affecting your recovery. Then our team develops a personal treatment plan consisting of physical and occupational therapy, lifestyle changes, and possibly sometimes medications.

By helping you as early as possible, we hope to get you back to your normal life, both at home and at work.

If you would like information about how to manage symptoms on your own, review the materials on our website for ideas and suggestions.

If you would like help from a health care provider, please contact our team. Use the links below to set up an appointment.  We look forward to partnering with you to help you feel better.

Hi Mary,
Please contact Mayo Clinic appointments to discuss insurance options. Here's the contact information: http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

The COVID activity rehabilitation program (CARP) at Mayo Clinic is for people who have had a COVID infection. From a conversation you and I were having in another discussion, it is my understanding that you have not had COVID. Is that correct?

Are you looking into the program for someone else?

Hi Colleen – Yes I am looking for my 31 year old son. He has insurance but it is not accepted at Mayo. He doesnt know if he had COVID before he received the vaccine – although some of his friends did and he did have a cough for awhile but not much else. He is suffering from fog brain, dizziness, exhaustion – things that some people have talked about after receiving the vaccine. Is there something or somewhere he can go to get help?

Hello Mary – Yes, here is a resource – https://www.survivorcorps.com/pccc
Scroll down the page, click on your state or one nearby, and you will find a list of places that offer post-Covid programs. Their requirements for admission differ, but many don't care about whether you had a positive Covid test – only about the symptoms and their duration.
Another thing I like to remind young people – appropriate rest, healthy diet and moderate exercise may not always be their highest priority in life, but are crucial to recovery from any illness. While he is waiting to find a program and get treatment, he can begin by making sure he is doing all of those things for himself, as well as quitting any smoking, vaping, or alcohol.
If he doesn't believe you, you can refer him here to all of the specialists: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/post-covid-recovery/
