Life Beyond A Heart Transplant is Vibrant and Full for Elmo Aquino
Elmo Aquino was always an avid runner, until one morning 15 years ago when he got on the treadmill and was unable to run. Elmo immediately knew something was wrong, and as a Florida resident, he decided that going to Mayo Clinic was a “no-brainer.” Elmo was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and ended up in the ICU. “Patients with dilated cardiomyopathy typically have an enlarged heart with weakened heart muscle,” according to Dr. Daniel Yip, medical director for the Heart Failure and Transplant Program at Mayo Clinic. He says that patients may develop congestive heart failure, which makes it hard to carry out every day activities. Learn more about Elmo’s condition and how he’s doing today from Sharing Mayo Clinic.
