An average day at the doctor’s office for a routine ultrasound quickly turned into the worst day of Jennifer Gutman’s life. During her visit, her youngest son, Lucas, was diagnosed with a severe heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Through the support of her family, Jennifer was connected to Timothy Nelson, M.D., Ph.D., at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Nelson was able to get baby Lucas into a clinical trial for treatment through umbilical cord stem cells. “To have a team of people who go through all of this with you and who you can clearly see are all in with helping these kids — that means everything to us” says Jennifer.
